Acne doesn’t just afflict teenagers who are dealing with rampant hormones. It can strike at any age, and the blemishes are always unwelcome. Regardless of your age, there are some steps you can take to avoid awkward breakouts.

Treating acne starts with gently cleaning the face. You don’t want to strip your skin of the oils that keep it soft, but you do want to keep it clean and pores unclogged. Cleaners such as Dove and Cetaphil will work effectively. You can also choose excellent cleaners that are designed especially for the sensitive skin on the face. Your face should be cleaned every morning, and you should also take the time to clean it every night before you head off to bed.

Swings in your blood sugar levels can trigger hormonal reactions. These reactions can cause a spike in sebum production, more dead skin cells and blocked pores. You can avoid these problems, and the outbreaks they cause, by making a few changes to your diet.

• Reduce the amount of fat you consume. Eating meals that are high in fat can interfere with insulin receptors, increase a resistance to insulin and lead to more breakouts.

• Avoid processed foods and sugary snacks. Try to enjoy a diet that makes use of whole foods and meals made from scratch.

• Eat smaller meals. Consuming large amounts of food at one time can cause the body to develop a resistance to insulin, and you could find yourself dealing with more breakouts.

One of the most persistent culprits behind acne is the unconscious habit of touching your face. Your hands are usually covered in microscopic bacteria. Touching or rubbing your face will transfer the bacteria and contribute to breakouts. Your phones are also breeding areas for bacteria, so you should avoid touching them to your face. Use a Bluetooth with your cell phone to help avoid breakouts along your cheeks. A pad dipped in alcohol can be used to clean phones at home and in the office. Your pillowcase is also a breeding ground for bacteria. Even if you wash the sheets on a weekly basis, you should still change your pillowcase between washings. This will help you avoid pimples on the face and neck.

The final advice for dealing with acne breakouts is to stop picking at the acne. Constantly touching the pimples will make the sores more noticeable and may even cause them to spread. A small amount of Neosporin can be used to help the pimples heal on their own. You can also invest in spot treatments containing salicylic acid. These treatments can help blemishes heal faster, without making them worse or causing them to spread.
