There are many myths about what will or won't cause your hair to grow. Here are five myths I would like to dispel as we learn to care for our hair.
Hair Myth #1
Cutting your hair will make it grow faster. This simply is not true. I'm not sure how this one got started. I've heard that it was by hair stylists. They want you to come to the salon on a regular basis so they tell you that you need to get a haircut every four to six weeks, but it's just a way for them to make more money. Since every stylist I've ever met were very reputable, I'm tempted to dispel that characterization as a myth unto itself.
What I do know is that, if you are trying to grow out your hair, the only reason you NEED to get it cut is to remove damaged or split ends. If you're trying to grow your hair out, why would you cut it if you don't have to?
Hair Myth #2
Pulling your hair into a sight style will make it grow faster. The idea behind this is that if you pull it tight enough, your hair will start growing faster in order to relieve the tension. What will actually happen is that your hair will start to break off, and you can even cause bald spots or a receding hair line.
Hair Myth #3
Brushing your hair will make it grow faster. Brushing your hair won't make it grow faster, and excessive brushing will cause it to break. I recommend using a wide toothed comb over a brush, but as long as you are gentle, and don't pull on your hair I think either one is probably fine.
Hair Myth #4
Natural hair grows faster than chemically processed hair. This is a big one for women with relaxed hair or those who dye their hair. Harsh chemicals might damage your hair, but going natural won't cause your hair to grow any faster.
Hair Myth #5
Oiling your scalp will make your hair grow faster. All oiling your scalp will do is clog pores, and give you an oily scalp. This can actually hinder your hair growth. Oil your hair instead of your scalp. Some great oils to use are:
- Jojoba Oil
- Moroccan Oil
- Virgin Coconut Oil
And remember, a little goes a long way. Use too much, and your hair will look greasy.
Conclusion
The best way to grow your hair is by keeping it healthy. Start with a healthy diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables. Also make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Keep your hair well moisturized, but most of all, avoid falling for these hair growth myths as we learn to care for our hair.
