Ah, our health. We all claim we are thankful to have it, we will drink a toast to it, and regret not taking better care of it when it is gone, but what about our skin? Don’t we care about our skin’s health too? Sadly, in too many cases, no. But, what exactly is healthy skin and what does it do for us as a whole?

The body is a remarkable collection of systems and organs that work together to keep us running like a well-oiled machine. The largest organ in our body is the remarkable material that covers us from head to toe and keeps our other organs protected- our skin.

When our body suffers an injury, it is our skin that feels it first and is often our first line of defense. Internal problems can sometimes be noticed by something that happens to the skin, alerting us to the trouble brewing. Our skin should be as well cared for and monitored as the other systems of our body, but it is often neglected to painful and occasionally embarrassing results.

Healthy skin is strong, supple and attractive. It makes us smile with satisfaction when we inspect ourselves in the mirror each morning. It takes very little time or effort to keep your skin healthy, but the benefits are huge. So, what does healthy skin look like, exactly?

Healthy skin has an even color and tone regardless of skin coloration. Unhealthy skin can be blotchy, spotty or have dark circles and shadows under the eye or near the jawbone. This can be covered up or masked with makeup, but the underlying reason should be investigated and treated at some point.

Smoothness is another hallmark of healthy skin. Have you ever had a lover gently caress your cheek, and declare your skin as soft as velvet? Unhealthy skin can be bumpy or scarred from acne, wrinkled or creased. Preventing excess wrinkling or scarring is key to keeping a healthy skin texture.

Healthy skin is supple, taut and well hydrated. Every day, dead skin cells slough off of our skin surface. In healthy skin we do not notice this at all, but when there is a problem with the skin’s health it may start sloughing off more skin cells than it needs to at one time leading to dry, possibly itchy, irritated skin. Keeping your skin well moisturized, especially in the winter months can keep it healthier.

And finally, healthy skin goes largely unnoticed unless you are looking at it for one reason or another. Skin that has some kind of an issue will have some itching, burning, tingling or pulling to alert you to a problem. Healthy skin just goes about its job quietly and without any odd sensations at all.
