Healthy Skin Series

As most of you know, the skin is the largest organ in the body. It is a powerful barrier to the elements and protects the outside from our insides. Healthy food and exercise are great ways to give skin the nutrients it needs. When it comes the health of our skin, western culture and medicine often treat symptoms without going after the cause.

When people have chronic dry or oily skin they use lotions that treat dry or oily skin (the symptom). In this case, going after the cause of the dry or oily skin would produce healthier skin and better results. Problem skin is usually a combination of items including:

  • Stress
  • Unhealthy food
  • Water intake
  • Excessive exposure to elements (sun and wind)
  • Ineffective products (lotions, creams or foams)
  • Lack of or ineffective exercise
  • Genetics

In this series on Healthy Skin, we will investigate each item in the context of a skin management program. We will review causes, effects and symptoms, and discuss prevention as well as treatment. It is often the case that concern for healthy skin arises because of the expression of symptoms, so treatment is necessary. But while treatment allows for temporary relief, steps for prevention should be taken to create an ongoing program for healthy skin.

This article is the first in a series of eight articles. Each of the seven items bulleted above effect healthy skin and contribute to problem skin. The objective is to create the best possible situation for balanced skin. If you consider your skin dry, oily or normal, what you learn here will give you both treatment solutions and prevention solutions. While the symptoms (dry, oily and normal) are specific to your situation, the causes are fundamental and prevention of the excesses (dry and oily) is the ultimate goal.

Lifestyle

Your lifestyle is a major contributor to your overall health. While this series discusses healthy skin, balance and moderation are key contributors to helping you achieve your goals. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2011 the average time spent watching television in the United States was 2.8 hours per day or 19.6 hours per week. That equates to 11.67% of the average U.S. Citizens’ day spent watching television. While there is nothing inherently “wrong” with watching T.V., balance and moderation are key contributors to achieving your goals. If you are the average here, please note that in 2009 63.1% of U.S. Citizens were overweight. In both of these cases, being below average is the goal.

We will be exploring how your lifestyle affects your skin, so stay tuned and get ready for action on your skin.
