Heathy Hair Growth Tips for African American Hair

When it comes to growing long healthy hair, it's a bit of a challenge. Here I've listed a few key tips that will help you on your hair growth journey.

Hair examination

First, you'll want to determine the condition of your hair. Is it dry and brittle, thinning, or damaged from chemicals, weaves or braids? It is important to understand what state your hair is in so you can decide the proper treatments and products to use. Start by looking at your hair in the mirror, does it lack shine? Begin to touch your hair from roots to ends. Does it feel rough? If so, is it more towards the ends or closer to the roots? Now, you'll want to section your hair and look for any bald spots, breakage or dryness on the scalp. If you are unable to examine your hair, seek the advice of a professional.

Choose the correct products

The products you use are very important and should address your specific hair needs. For example, if your hair is thinning, use products for thinning hair or if it's dry and brittle, use moisturizing products. There are also certain ingredients to look for when doing your research. Shampoos that don't contain any harsh chemicals will be gentle and provide the nutrients the hair needs. Shampoos and conditioners containing emu oil are great for repairing, strengthening and moisturizing the hair. Emu oil is trans-dermal, which means it penetrates deep into the layers to help heal and moisturize.

Deep condition treatments

For best results, deep condition you hair every week or two weeks.Apply the conditioner from root to ends, comb through and sit under a hood dryer for 10-15 minutes. Hair steamers also work very well. If you don't have any of these items, you can wrap a warm towel around your hair or use a plastic cap.

Get regular trims

The mistake most women make when growing their hair is not getting trims. This isn't the correct thing to do. I know it's hard. But you'll at least want to trim your hair every 8-12 weeks. As long as you condition properly, you can stretch out you trims. But do get them.

Hair styling

Keep heat styling to a minimum or not at all. Choose to set your hair on rollers and wrap it up every night. There are a lot of cute bun styles that you can create that will not damage your hair. Also, stay away from harsh gels and hair sprays that are drying.

The most important key to growing long hair is consistency. You have to be mindful of what you put in you hair and how you handle it. It's just like exercising. In order to achieve a desired weight a person must work out consistently and eat the right foods. Well, the same goes for your hair. Just make a plan, set your goal and you will be well on your way to having long healthy hair.
