You probably have both milk and honey in your kitchen and have never given any thought to using these two products together as a skin care remedy. You may have used milk or even honey separately, but what is there about these two simple items together that makes them a dynamic duo? What are the health benefits of milk & honey for your skin?
Tiny Bit Of History
Well, first of all the expression "milk and honey" has been used a very long time ago in the Bible. Here that expression is used to symbolize abundance and prosperity. Honey has been highly prized as a skin care ingredient in past civilizations, and it is still used today. Honey, in fact, has enjoyed a very good reputation for a very, very long time - and with good reason.
What's So Great About Milk & Honey?
Did you know that honey is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, acts as a humectant (which means it pulls moisture out of the air), reduces inflammation, possesses incredible medical benefits, helps the skin to heal quickly, has vitamins and minerals, and is a cook's best friend - and plus, did I mention that it tastes amazing?
What about milk? It also sports an impressive resume when it comes to skin care. Not only is it nutritious but it has vitamins, too. What you may not have known about milk is that it contains lactic acid, a gentle, effective alpha-hydroxy acid that is very efficient in eliminating toxins from the skin. It also exfoliates the top layer of your skin, resulting in a soft and smooth feel and look, which translates into a marvelous, youthful glow. So when we look at both products, we can see why they work so well together!
The Proof Is In The Pudding (or should we say "Honey")
Cleopatra has been known as one of the most beautiful women who ever lived, and she is reported to have used milk and honey as part of her regular skin care regimen. Moving on to our time, honey in cosmetics is big, big business. You find honey in everything from lotions to shampoos. Many upscale spas and retreats use honey masks and treatments as part of their skin therapy, and clients don't think twice about dropping serious coin to enjoy one of these treatments. And why? Because they work, plain and simple.
Don't have the time or money to pamper yourself at one of these spas? No worries. I'm going to give you an incredible recipe that is inexpensive, effective and easy to use. It will incorporate milk and honey. You're going to love it.
Honey Salt Scrub
1 tbsp raw or Manuka honey (not in the honey bear squeeze bottle)
Few drops of olive or coconut oil
1 tsp milk
1 tsp sea salt
The above is for one application.
Here's what you do:
Mix all ingredients together until it looks sort of like peanut butter. Apply on your skin in a circular motion after you have cleansed it. Avoid your eye area. Leave on for about 10 minutes, then rinse off with warm water. Your skin will feel and look soft, hydrated and glowing. Follow up with a moisturizer.
Skin care is just one of the many benefits of honey. It is truly one of the greatest gifts to man. When was the last time you used honey?
