Your Own At Home Spa Experience

Who doesn't want to be pampered? A visit to a spa is a wonderful way to do this. Making this happen however, may not be so easy to do. A full spa treatment costly and it's not something we should be limited to enjoy only every once in a great, long while. Why not then have the spa experience in the comfort of your own home? Although nothing beats being able to plop down and let someone else do all the pampering, you can still have a very relaxing, rejuvenating experience and for a fraction of the cost. Plus, you can invite a friend and make it fun.

All you need to do is be prepared. There are a few things you'll have to get ready so that you're good to go.

1. Plan ahead and gather all the materials you'll need. If you're busy like me it's really important to plan the exact time and day you're going to do this. You want this time to yourself uninterrupted and quiet. Also make sure you allow yourself between two to three hours for everything. It may seem like a lot but remember you'll have to set up and you want to linger in every activity. Feeling rushed will only take away from the experience. For me this would mean going to a friend's house or having my husband take the evening off and taking our son. I actually recommend doing this in the evening since it's the perfect way to prepare yourself for a great night's sleep! If you want to get the most out of a home experience you have to almost do it as if you're not home. That way you feel the real "getting away" sensation.

Also, have everything you need and have it handy. The last thing you want is to start your relaxing activities and have to stop right in the middle of the experience because you are missing something. I am going to post afterwards a few really great, simple recipes for the treatments of your choice.

2. You need to set the mood. What's so great about going to a spa is the atmosphere stimulates all of your five senses. You can do this by:

• Dimming the lights. This will create a soft, quiet mood visually.

• Pick out some calming aromas. You can do this for example with candles or incense. Some of the treatments you may try could have essential oils as well, but its best to begin your spa experience with relaxing smells before you get started with the treatments. A few good choices are lavender (my favorite), chamomile,

• Have some sort of music ready that compliments the experience. A lot of new age music like you'd hear while getting a massage are great for this. You can just play the album the whole way through and not need to bother making a playlist or skipping songs.

• Make a pot of herbal tea to and have water ready as well. Its great for staying hydrated and calms you from the inside out.

• Create an area for your spa that is clean and comfortable. Some of the treatments are a little messy and involve water, washing and rinsing so you'll want to have the bathroom a main part of your spot. If your bathroom is big enough, I recommend doing the whole experience there and just bringing in a relaxing chair.

You can look online for homemade spa treatments if you are looking for something specific. There are endless recipes and combinations you can try. I am going to list here just a few. Enjoy!

Facials and masks:

Combine:

1 egg yolk

1 tbs. honey

1 tbs. yogurt

1 tbs. sugar

Mix well and smooth over skin and let sit 25 minutes. Wash with luke warm water and rinse with cool water.

Under eye relaxer:

2 chamomile tea bags

Wet and cool tea bags in freezer for 1 minute. Place them on and under your eyes for 15 minutes with eyes closed.

1 raw potato without skin or 1 cucumber without skin

Blend either into a liquid pulp and apply a good amount onto closed eyes. Lye back and keep on 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

Hair mask treatment:

2 tbs. olive oil

1 tbs. honey

1 avocado

Or

1 avocado

1 tbs. lemon

1 tbs. aloe

1 tsp. sea salt

Mix either combination and massage into hair. Let sit 20 minutes. Rinse and shampoo.

Body scrub:

1 cup brown sugar

1 cup olive oil

1 tbs. fresh ground ginger

Massage in circular movements all over body. Rinse.

Tired feet treatment:

4 chamomile tea bags

1/8 cup dried parsley

4 drops essential oil of your choice

Use 2 to 3 tablespoons in water enough to cover feet and as hot as you can take it comfortably. Let water sit 10 minutes before soaking feet. Soak feet as long as desired.
