Bed & Breakfast Holidays In Dartmoor

My girlfriend and I wanted to take a short autumn break somewhere peaceful and picturesque. We considered going abroad but didn’t want all the hassle of booking flights and getting to the airport so we decided to look for somewhere in the UK.

When looking for somewhere our criteria involved a destination that was close both to stunning scenery and cultured cities, plenty of walks and lots to things to do. After checking the map we thought Dartmoor would make a suitable base for our holiday – amazing scenery yet still close to beautiful historic cities such as Exeter.

We started looking for hotels, but we’re both quite active people and we decided that a bed and breakfast might be more suited to our purpose as we expected to be out and about every day. We started searching on the internet for bed and breakfasts in Dartmoor. We were amazed by how many there were – from farmhouse bed and breakfasts in the heart of Dartmoor to luxury converted mill houses, there’s plenty of choice!

On a sunny morning in mid-October, we set off towards Devon along the M5, it’s a nice easy drive and our bed and breakfast was only 10 miles outside Exeter. Luckily we had been able to find a dog friendly bed and breakfast and after our journey we weren’t the only ones who needed to stretch our legs. Our bed and breakfast was only 3 miles outside Dartmoor, so we headed straight out onto the moor to get some lovely fresh country air into our lungs. Mission accomplished and ready for a wholesome meal we made our way back to our Dartmoor b&b that luckily were able to provide a lovely two course meal.

One of my favourite things about staying in a b&b is that you’re almost always guaranteed an excellent home cooked breakfast, and our Devon bed and breakfast was certainly no exception. All set up for the day, our first stop was Castle Drogo – a national trust property and Britain’s ‘youngest’ castle. The views across Dartmoor from the ramparts and the castle grounds were stunning.

With the day getting on we decided it was time to grab some lunch so we drove through Dartmoor towards Princetown where we were able to find a lovely pub. It was just how you’d imagine a typical Devon pub with great local ales and even better food! With everything put right, we headed off on another long walk across Dartmoor taking in the views from the areas famous tors. As you can imagine, it had been a fairly exhausting day by the time we had finished exploring and we were looking forward to getting back to our luxury Devon b&b for a bit of relaxation before heading back out towards Exeter for dinner.

For a fairly small city, Exeter has an excellent choice of places to eat, from high end restaurants and high street chains to excellent local independents. We opted for the latter and weren’t disappointed with our choice. It had been a long day and we had eaten lots so it was nice not to have to drive too far from Exeter to get back to our Dartmoor bed and breakfast.

It was the final day of our Devon bed and breakfast holiday and the owners once again provided an excellent breakfast selection. Instead of heading back into Dartmoor, we decided to sample the daytime delights of Exeter. Of Exeter’s many attractions, the 14th Century underground passages are surely one of the oldest. We enjoyed learning all about Exeter’s history but it felt like a waste being stuck underground on such a sunny day so we headed to Exeter Quay for lunch. We’d had such a big breakfast at our B&B in Dartmoor that anything else was a bit of a struggle, but it was nice just enjoying a drink by the waterside.

Sadly this marked the end of our Devon B&B holiday and time to return home – but we can’t wait to return as soon as possible. It had been a great idea to stay in a Devon bed and breakfast and the location near both Dartmoor and Exeter was perfect!
