There is a large part of your backyard that is never used and it is starting to look like a mini-tip. Tired of this scene every time you look out of the window you decide to do something positive with it. Raising chickens! A great idea. Not only will you get a supply of regular healthy eggs ( and chicken meat if necessary ) you will be provided with high quality natural fertilizer.

You could go straight out and buy yourself a nice new shiny chicken coop from your local garden center but where is the fun in that. Building your own chicken coop will cost you a fraction of the price and will let you put your own personal touch on proceedings. Start by going out and buying the best materials and tools for the job - using cheap materials will only cost you more money in the long run through various repairs and weathering. The tools you will need will not cost the earth and can be picked up in most common workshops or d.i.y. shops.

Excessive moisture throughout the chicken coop will cause the chickens to become very, very ill and cost you money to eventually replace them. You should design your chicken coop with a clear ventilation system in mind. The front door of the coop will provide certain amounts of ventilation but if you need more you can always add windows to the coop to do just that.

Chickens are farmyard animals, remember this. Farmyard animals tend to be reasonably filthy animals and this can become a problem when it comes to keeping the chicken coops healthy and clean. Remember to make the main door to the coop large enough so you can lean in and clean the whole area. As well as this you can make sure the floor of the coop slopes slightly towards the door area to aid you when it comes to cleaning out.

The weather will effect your chickens well-being especially if you are in an area that gets constant bad weather. A couple of simple chicken lights will help keep your chickens warm through then worst of weather. they also provide a bit of false daylight when the shorter winter days and longer winter nights arrive.

A chicken coop will take a little work to get up and running but is quite a flawless system if done correctly. A chicken coop will safely house your chickens and help produce healthy, organic eggs for your family for years to come.
