When it comes to chicken keeping the are a few necessities that you must keep in mind for success. These days the prospect of raising chickens is not as frightening as it may once of been.

Long gone are the days of chickens being confined or labeled to a farmyard situation. So you have come to the decision that you would like to raise chickens on your property, one problem though, where to keep the chickens. With successful chicken keeping you are going to need a chicken coop. These days it is very easy to come across chicken coops in any outdoor or garden store.

These ready made coops will cost you around about four hundred dollars ( five hundred odd Great British pounds ). Now, not many off us are going to have this amount of money just lying around to spend on a coop so what is the alternative? You can build a coop for chicken keeping and it will only cost you about fifty percent of the cost of buying one. You do not need to be a qualified wood tradesman and the materials needed are very reasonably priced ( along with the tools ).

The basic plans or designs for the chicken coop can be purchased very cheaply online and once you have them you should answer one very important question before proceeding - How many chickens do I intend to keep? As a rule of thumb ( that should really be observed ) chickens will need about four square feet of room each to live healthy, happy lives. This will determine what size your chicken coop will be.

The size will also become a factor when placing the coop in your garden but remember, chickens need a day and night cycle. Try your best to find the space in your garden or yard that receives the most amount of natural daylight. If you have a reasonably dark garden then this could prove a problem as the chickens health will be effected by the lack of light in daytime hours. This can be overcome by fitting a couple of special lights inside the coop and these lights will also give out extra heat in the colder winter months. chicken keeping is great fun and with the introduction of mobile coops can be carried out in the smallest of gardens. The birds make great pets and serve as a good responsibility for children. Locate hen house plans that fit your needs and you should have little problem with building a chicken coop.
