Are you toying with the idea of raising your own chickens ( poultry ) and benefiting from the fresh organic eggs they produce? If so you may have already crossed the concept of chicken coops. These days chicken coops are becoming more and more popular and building your own is fast becoming even more popular. So why would you want to build your own coop - what a waste of time! Not at all, the price of buying a coop from a store may have fallen but they still retail at around the five hundred dollar mark. FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS!! in the current economic climate I doubt there are many of us that can afford to spare this type of money.

Would you be surprised if I told you that if you build your own chicken coop it will only cost you approximately half the price of buying a manufactured one ( now that sounds more like it! ). The materials used to build a chicken coop are really not that expensive at all. The tools needed to build the coop are not at all specialized - you really can get away with doing this on a budget.

Hopefully by now you should have some sort of idea on how many chickens you plan to keep. This is vital to effectively choose your chicken coop design plans. No matter what the plans say you should really consider including windows in your chicken coop. Windows have two very important uses in a chicken coop - 1. Windows will provide a source of ventilation for the coop ( chickens tend to make a lot of mess and boy it smells at times ). 2. Windows will increase the amount of natural sunlight that is let into the coop and this is very important for the health of the chickens and the eggs they lay.

We just touched on the sunlight chickens get. This is very important and if you cannot find a spot in your garden that produces enough natural light for your chicken coop then you can buy some relatively cheap chicken coop lights. These lights produce very good light and also help heat the coop and keep the chickens in the long winter months. Remember to keep the light fittings high up so that the birds do not peck at them and hurt themselves as well as the lights.

Chickens and coops these days go hand in hand. To build your own is not as much effort as you may think. Plan it out properly and your chicken coop will soon be regularly producing a steady supply of fresh eggs.
