Cockatiel training is an essential part of owning these cute little creators, cockatiels are intelligent and very cheeky, but they do come with some very strange, and bad behaviours. Below is a small introduction to the top 3, and worst behaviour you will be faced with, and you will have to deal with.
* Screaming, and not your average flock calling. * Biting and hissing * Feather plucking till they literally bleed
This is probably the worst 3, but with-in saying that there are plenty more. My cockatiel "Boofy" use to put on a limping act, it worked in the beginning untill 2 visits to the avarian vet and $200 later, I eventually found out this was his way of getting my attention.
Never under ESTIMATE the intelligence of these parrots, cockatiels learn really fast and they actually love doing tricks, that has probably got to do with the treats they get, but they are also big show offs, so for this reason if not any others it is worth putting them through cockatiel training.
This doesn't mean you have to spend weeks, or months around the clock training them, it as simple as 20 minute per day for at least 3 day to teach them a basic trick like waving. If your parrot bits it usually takes about 72 hours to rectify that bad habit, and that is exactly what it is a habit.
This is an example of how cockatiel training can stop your cockatiel biting, 5 simple steps to follow.
* Trust - Trust is the key factor in cockatiel training, if you can get his trust he will then do anything for you * Command - Pick a command such as voice or a clicker and stick to it. * Patience - Patience is extremely important because all birds learn on different levels, so this is needed as your parrot may take a little longer to get it. * Praise - Alway give him treats and make a big deal out of it when you gets it right. * Repeat- Repeat the cockatiel training over, and over till he gets it right.
Cockatiel training is very simple, cockatiels are extremely smart and learn very quickly. So if you want to have a cheeky, fun-loving and might I add, well-behaved cockatiel it is worth putting him through cockatiel training before he gets to set in his ways.
So are you ready for cockatiel training to stop the screaming, biting and tantrum throwing?
I love cockatiels and appreciate your article. I had never heard of the limping act but would not put anything past these guys. Definitely "Attitudinal" Sherry M.
