The idea of building a d.i.y. chicken coop may well seem like an idea and nothing more. You have never been any good at d.i.y. or home improvement and you do not want to fail miserably at building a coop. Don't worry, you do not need to be a qualified carpenter or worker to create a chicken coop you just need a bit of patience and dedication. The whole project can be finished with just a basic tool selection from your local d.i.y. shop.

The first question you should be asking yourself is what chickens are you planning on keeping. Every breed of chicken will differ slightly and may need different functions in the coop. So, how many of these chickens are you going to keep, this will effect the overall size of the chicken coop. Once you have answered these questions you should choose an area of land ( garden ) that you are going to build the coop on. You must choose a area where there is decent natural light as well as sufficient cover ( protection ).

Make sure you buy and collect all the materials that you will need before you start building the chicken coop. You do not want to get half way through the construction and then realize you are missing a vital part ( very frustrating ). If you decide to build a coop you can get it up and running with between 2-3 days. That's no time at all and you will save approximately fifty percent of the money you would spend on a manufactured, ready made coop.

Building the coop yourself will give you complete control over the quality level of the enclosure and you can build it to your own specifications. Try to remember that the chicken coop will stand out in your garden so try to make it pleasing to the eye. Neighbors may start to complain if you paint the coop a 'loud' color that spoils the overall look of the street. Also, try not to build the chicken coop to close to a hedged area. Hedges are perfect places for pests and predators to hide, you will pay decent money for a chicken and you do not want them to become a meal for these hunters.

So remember - check the design plans you have for what materials you will need. Follow all the guidelines so the chicken coop is a safe haven for the chickens. Plan everything out before hand and enjoy the experience - it will be a lot easier than you think.
