Raising chickens can be a very rewarding project which will provide you with a constant supply of fresh, organic eggs. So the decision is made and you have an idea on how many chickens you plan to house, next step - how to house your chickens. It would be easy enough to pop out to your local store and buy yourself a ready built chicken coop but can any of us really afford five hundred dollars in this current climate? Another popular option is to build your own chicken coop using chicken coop designs or plans.

Whilst building your own chicken coop is a rewarding enough project it will also save you about half the cost of buying the coop. The materials needed to build the coop are very cheap and can be found laying around your garden shed. The tools needed are again very basic and can be found in nearly all toolboxes. So you know how many chickens you want so now choose the chicken coop plans that will cover this amount ( as a rule of thumb you should have four square feet of room per chicken ). If you are finding it difficult to get hold of plans that completely suit your needs then get ones that are a little bit bigger - you can always expand later if you wish.

Ventilation will play a very big part in the health of your chickens. It is always advisable to choose chicken coop plans with a couple of windows involved. Chickens tend to make a lot of mess and the odors given off can be very strong. Bearing this in mind it is always advisable to make the coop easy to clean. Building sliding doors to the front of the coop will let you be able to lean in and clean out the area. Using materials on the floor also aid the cleaning process so pick either wood chip or straw and spread over the coop floor.

Chickens are like us when it comes to their day cycles - they sleep at night and they awake for the morning time. If this cycle is disturbed then the chickens health and the eggs they produce will be drastically effected. Make sure you position your chicken coop in an area of your garden where you will get the best natural daylight. If this is not possible then you can purchase a couple of lights to position high up in the chicken coop ( these lights will also give off handy heat for the chickens in the winter season ).

Building a chicken coop does not have to hard and you do not need to be a carpenter to succeed at it. Find chicken coop plans that fill your needs and stick to the basic tips and principles.
