Keeping Chickens And Ducks

I have talked to a lot of people who raise chickens and one subject always seems to rear it's ugly head - is keeping chickens and ducks together a good idea. Well, as far as a good idea I'd say no, but it is very possible to succeed.

Most old timers would say that keeping chickens and ducks in separate enclosures is the only way to go but as you'd expect - I disagree. I have many friends who have succeeded at this. Don't get me wrong, chickens and ducks can fight and it can be pretty brutal. The ducks are not really the problem ( although they often instigate the fighting ) it's the chickens that do the most damage with their sharp beaks pecking away.

The most important point involved in keeping chickens and ducks is the the amount of space you have available. If you have enough room then keeping the two together should be relatively easy. Make sure you place the feeding area for the two species far apart from each other. This goes for their shelter to, make sure they are at opposite ends of the area.

It's worth checking out what young chickens should stay away from in their diet. I say this because keeping chickens and ducks together will lead one into eating the other ones food. Older ducks pretty much feed themselves with duckweed and insects etc but when they are younger they are fed different foods. One answer to this is to feed ducks underwater! What I mean by this is sink the food into the water to let the ducks 'duck' for it, this way the chickens will not get any of their food.

Water - water is going to be a problem when it comes to keeping chickens and ducks. If you do not provide a place of water for the ducks to reside they will end up in the chickens water supply. This will again lead to fighting. Always remember to try to suspend the chickens water up near their perches somehow. By having the chickens flying up to the perch to drink it eliminates the problem of the ducks winding them up.

Ducks only want to wash themselves when it comes to water and it is a natural thing for them to do. When keeping chickens and ducks it is advisable to put a small old bathtub in the area - they will be very happy with this and live happier lives alongside the chickens.
