Blogging For the Fun Of It – My Hobby Photography

I've a passion for art and an appreciation for those that can, the writers, poets, painters, sculptors, and photographers. At school my leaning was towards the sciences, those that slanted to the arts, not friends. The arts seemed so feminist at a time when a boy wanted to become a man. (or so I thought.)

I, blessed with a talent for mathematics and science, saw a future occupation that would allow me to work outdoors. I wasn't wrong, I became a land surveyor and this gave me more time outdoors than I ever expected. My time in tertiary education had me mixing with girls attending for arts, this was a revelation, to impress the opposite sex it was necessary to show an interest in the subjects that they were studying. Photography, painting, and writing all subjects I confronted with.

I became impressed with what I saw, in some cases that is, others I hoped would find themselves a good man who would be able to support them in the future. The one art that fascinated me the most, photography. That time, digital unheard of, required much thought to go into a picture, printing cost being what they were. An incorrect exposure, a blurred shot, a miss-composure, guaranteed a wasted film. My fascination with the subject they shot and the ease that some managed the perfect shot, had me decide I could do it.

My first “Instamatic” camera taught me how little natural flair I had for this hobby. Collecting prints, a packet containing ten photos, had more blank, black and blurred photos than anything one could brag about. Bit the bug had bitten and perseverance through the years has brought me to the digital cameras, now I can shoot as many as I wish and cut all those that do not meet a certain standard. Some how it is very difficult to drop a photo, there is always something that attracts me to it. I now own an expensive Fuji-film camera, with functions that allow me to experiment, ISO settings, f stops, shutter speeds and focus all have a more defined meaning. My hobby has become a reality, the interest in photographing birds, animals and flora being the main subjects.

As per my fascination with writing, building the courage to write on a public forum, where others could read my continuing illustration of diverse writings, I decided to attempt the same with the more than seventeen thousand photos that I have. My blogging with photos has brought me in contact with such diverse talent from all over the world. Like Street Articles, one follows others and pass comment on their posts, and this way others return the favour. The days pass increasingly busy, with more blogs to check and others photos to study, as well as to post ones own photos. There is still the need to write, to read and to comment on the expounding of those fellow authors I follow.

Am I having fun with the blogging that has now increased to three blog sites? Tremendously, the more than 120 visits a day shows that there are others in the world fascinated by photos. The comments are different to those on S.A., more complementary than one expects, the like button used more often and the replies often instantaneous. I have yet to find a blog containing adverts, so I expect that those I follow are blogging for fun and not money.

I learn something everyday by studying others composition and eye for detail, the talent out there beyond words. The strolls that are undertaken with only one thing in mind, to photograph something. There is never a day one says “I've gone blank”, as so often happens when writing, as any photo taken, manipulated to have a certain acceptable result.

This is why I find that my blogging is so much fun, there is no pressure, and having thousands of photos saved, I can post a blog from the past without the pressure of having to create. I discussed the possibility to stop writing with Linda, as my day has become longer, I spend all day on the laptop. She would have no hearing of it, I think she is enjoying having me out of her hair.

How lovely for you to have time on your hands... lovely for us too. I'm not getting to my website building and like you am finding SA very enjoyable but very time consuming to read and comment every day. It's a hard call on how to balance it all and where to spend precious time. I think your blogging success is fantastic. All those visits! Awesome.

Yes, I'm getting comments from my husband that I've gotten off track and he's right. My rankings on Squidoo have plummeted and my website non-existent. I might have to set a restriction on SA. Reality says there's only so much I can do without neglecting other important things.

Rob, Enjoyable story. Well told. Good job. Aha! Found out your "secret" is experience! You've lived thru thousands of photos. Analyzed. Appreciated. Discovered what kind of photos fit you best. Hey! That means I'm not hopeless:-) Just not visual and not experienced... thanks for a good story with useful insights for me. blessings, Cynthia

Thanks Cynthia, I have lived a diverse life, experienced many differing things that speak volumes to some and looks of "now hes lying" to others. I have been encouraged by many to write down all my experiences as the children say they will never remember them all. My children encourage me to tell the grand children stories of my past, in the hope they will remember, and on occasions in others companies at a braai or the like, my son will ask me to tell the crowd of certain experiences. I lost so many photos of the old type with the flood that went through my house in 2001 and they have gone forever, my digital photos are stored in three or four different places, I cannot afford to loose them.

My daughter, our eldest, went to the Hallmark Inst. Of Photography right out of high-school, then went on travels and jobs that rival Jack London's, then returned to the School Of Visual Arts (SVA) in Manhattan--and I must steel myself for the trip into the city next week to attending her Graduation Ceremony--we are very proud of her. She often talks about her passion in ways that I am reminded of by your article. Personally, I prefer drawing and painting, but I do enjoy taking the occasional picture or shooting the occasional video, purely as a past-time--but I do see parallels between drawing and photography--both are reflective of the artist and both change over time--when I see one of my old drawings or look at older family photos I've taken, I get the same wonderful sense of something static being a perfect representation of time's passage.

How true Chris, it is astounding the way a photo can stimulate latent memories in one, not just the time and place but the "why did I take it like that" memories as well. I find a stroll around with the camera, relaxing, thought provoking, and creatively inspiring. A hobby I do not find a drive to do everyday but when the urge is there then my best photos seem to create themselves, Thanks for the comment, and good luck to your daughter, her graduation and future career.

I admire the facility with which you write, create the blogs, the pictures, and keep it all so interesting, and you keep it flowing. I'm interested in the same subject matter as you, though in the form of drawing and painting. I often focus on exotic flora and fauna in my work as a fabric designer and illustrator. Much to my surprise, writing has been great fun for me, though I have never thought of myself as any kind of a writer. I'm shocking myself by writing. Like some of the others here, I find it difficult to keep all the plates spinning at once. Each thing can take you up 100%. Kudos, Rob.

As I started on a reply to you we experienced a power drop and I did not get to finish my reply to your comment. I am maybe taking on more than I can chew, but I do so enjoy the inter change and learning curve I'm going through. Never having been blessed with the time to do this in the past I am trying to catch up lost time. I love the idea of the blogging for fun and seem to have found a very talented group in the photo for fun section of the bloggers. I can learn so much from them. Their compositions, and ideas I would never have thought of, it is great. Much like our group here where I am amid some of the best and most interesting authors I am having a ball. Thanks for the comment, and I'm sure you enjoy the niche of art in which you are ensconced.
