Have You Hit A Virtual Brick Wall?

Setting up an online business, whether a blog or a store, takes so much of our time and focus that one day we crash…not our system! Have you ever hit the virtual brick wall? And what do you do?

Is your Blood Pressure Rising?

When we make the decision to start our own website we know that we have to select our host, choose our theme, construct the framework, and then begin and continue to write quality content. We get caught up in the building of our site and sometimes, without knowing it, we are suddenly feeling like we are in panic mode and we don’t see the “blood pressure” rising, we don’t consider the glassy look in our eyes that others see…we don’t back up and ensure that our site is going in the right direction.

And then BAM! We hit the wall…we lay stunned…not sure why we’re doing this. And guess what, the brick wall wins every time. It will stop us in our tracks. And we think of the old adage:

• Can’t go through it

• Can’t go over it

• Can’t go around it

• So what do I do with it?

Only one direction left…back up! Take a break and take stock of what you are doing. Determine how you got to the wall in the first place because if you turn around…it’s not there. Here’s what I do:

1. Make a physical shift: First and foremost I do something physically different that takes me away from my laptop and therefore my website. Some folks will go for a walk, some will go shop (usually the ladies), and some will go destroy something (guys with sledgehammers attempting to “slay the wall”).

But really, walk away, take a breath…sometimes for an hour or a day. Another adage is “sleep on in it”. This is likely the one I use the most. Relax your body and distract your brain. You are likely so on edge that you’re not doing yourself or your site any good by forcing content or weeping over widgets…let it go…walk away.

2. Let things percolate: Oftentimes your brain is working on something on the back burner and it just isn't ready to come out yet and that’s OK. Trust your creative process. If you've been trying to write an article that isn't ready to be written then back burner it! To force it is to cheapen it and your readers will know.

When I put things on the back burner it is not with the intent to ignore it but to ponder it as I go on with my day or have a good night’s sleep. I “take it out”, spin it around, ponder the idea, and probably return it to the back burner.

And BOOM! It comes out because now is the time. And then you can’t write fast enough or get to your dashboard quick enough to fix that menu, category or widget. Problem solved.

3. Get help: Whether this comes from a family member, a friend, or the online community you associate with. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and let others know of the issue you are having and if they have any ideas to help you along.

The help you need is available; just make sure you have a support group when you need it. Who knows, maybe next time one of them will need your help with their idea.
