How to Start Making Money Online

“Sooo, you want to make some money huh!”

“What’s that, you want to make some money online?”

Typical request, typical response, typical attitude! But it’s really not so absurd. Sure there is a veritable multitude of scams, fly-by-night operators and straight out crooks online and you have to be careful who you decide to work with or take advice from.

There are honourable people online who will give you every assistance you could ever wish for, and quite often not expect a cent for it. So let’s see what it is that you need to do to make some money online.

Whilst it may take longer to bear fruit, one of the simpler ways to make money is to start a blog, it’s certainly cheaper than many of the other avenues. Once started, there are some crucial steps if you want to make sales.

Find Out What’s Bugging Your Readers and Offer Them A Fix

Alright ‘smart-ass’ how?

Get yourself a photo (or an “image”) of somebody who might be one of your customers one day, it doesn’t matter who it is! Then give him or her a name, my bloke’s Bert, and fill out his imaginary life.

Bert’s got a nice wife, Shirley, four kids under high-school age, a nice house with a big mortgage, a two year-old car (which they are still paying for) and a dog, Alice.

Do you see what I mean? Did Bert go to college? What magazines does he read, what does Shirley read? Fill out as much of a biography of Bert and his wife as you can, what problems do they have? I can suggest one already with a mortgage and four kids and a car they don’t own yet!

If you really have no idea what their problems are, talk to people, interview three or four for 5-10 minutes and ask them what they have problems with.

Once you have the data, write or paste it around the image you have and pin it to the wall above your monitor so that every time you sit down to write a post or an email you see the image of your ‘Bert’ and the problems he has.

You are on your way, you have just taken the very first step to making money online.

You Have Discovered Some of Their Problems, Now Offer Solutions! Communicate and Connect With Them.

How will you communicate with your Bert, how are you going to connect with him so as to be able to offer him the solutions he so desperately needs? How is going to learn to trust you? How is he going to discover your site and read your advice?

By the simple means of posting on Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, tweeting on Twitter and using other social media you will get new readers visiting your blog, at the same time making new natural backlinks. Google, and most other search engines, love these.

This won’t take a lot of your time, just post or tweet your blog posts to see which of the social media sites generates the most feedback and you can then devote a little more time to it.

Another way to generate natural backlinks is to guest post on someone else’s blog and you can also obtain more new readers this way. It is however, unlikely that you would be invited to guest on any well-established blogs but there’s nothing to stop you joining with three or four other, relatively new, bloggers and help each other by guest posting to each other’s sites, liking, tweeting and pinning their stuff.

A lot of backlinks and readers can be generated by just commenting (sensibly and to the point) on some of the major blogs in your field or niche. You can also ask the other members of your group to write a post to be published on your blog and naturally, you reciprocate!

Maintain Contact With Your New Readers (and Your Old Ones!)

Most people won’t take advantage of your offer the first time round (I did, but I’m one of the rare ones!), they usually need to ‘get to know you’ and develop some trust in you first.

Some need to pore over every post you have written immediately, some take weeks, months even years to make the right decision.

Of course the easiest way to stay in contact is for your new readers to opt-in to your newsletter, they will then receive your emails regularly so that your name stays at the top in their mind.

The accepted norm is for about 15-35% of your list will open each of your emails which means that, assuming you email weekly, they are only reading your stuff on a monthly basis.

Anticipation For Your Products is The Key

If you want to make money with your blog you have build anticipation in your readers, make them want to buy, making them eager for your products, services or crafts.

Many people miss out here, simply relying on sales pages, landing pages, sales emails, you are the one to make your readers want your stuff, you have to presell everything!

That means that every blog post, tweet, email, all of them have but one eventual aim, they are all leading toward your offer.

The first thing you need to do is to collect testimonials and case studies, if you haven’t sold any yet, offer the product free or discounted to several people on the proviso that they provide you with a testimonial.

Vague testimonials are worse than useless, “Steve’s course was magic!” Or “Jenny’s classes were great!” don’t really amount to much and are pretty pointless. On the other hand “John’s course enabled me to see that having a decent hive really was a pre-requisite for having a healthy, honey producing swarm of bees!” That really hits the mark.

After you have created some anticipation among your readers you need to create a waiting list.

Any time you create a new service, product or craft item, (and in some cases, before you have created it!) you need to pepper the social media and your blog with stories and posts about the new, or proposed new product.

You then ask your readers to join your waiting list so that they can become one of your “special customers” and get priority in the distribution list. This will have two benefits to you, it will give you some idea of how many are interested and also build in a “scarcity” factor.

Once you have your list of “special customers, you can close the waiting list and give them either a discount or a bonus when the selling really starts. This acts as a ‘thankyou’ for those who actually signed up for the waiting list.

The Act of Selling What You Have Developed

By now you have the three essentials for selling a product, any product! by using the steps I have described you have generated credibility, trust and a sense of anticipation in your readers; hopefully, a lot more readers than you had in the first place!

Now it is a matter of following through – Communicate

Build Anticipation

Make ’em Wait

Develop/Sell the product.
