How To Write Your Own Story

Regardless of our age many of us could potentially fill many books with our life stories. But how do we choose what to write about when we are blog authors and have a limited amount of space? How do you ensure you’re not just chatting about your “daily-doings” that no one will really read?

Choose significant events

Take some quiet time away from anything that might distract you and jot down significant events in your life that stand out. Many might think that this is when we graduated high school or got married or had kids. While these are obvious and important, and should be included, I want you to dig deeper.

There are times in our lives that are truly forks in the road when we need to make a decision that will affect the rest of our lives. Whether it’s choosing a career or university or whether we should take a certain job, these significant events typically include a major shift in our lives. They may take us to a different place or they may impact who we meet and spend time with. But there will be a profound and life changing event.

Here is one of mine: I had to choose between playing college basketball and get a small scholarship or continue working at a night job during college that paid decent money. Guess which I chose? It was the night job which, of course, affected my college marks and actually wound up setting me back a year, which also meant I did not graduate with those I started college with. Looking back I should have stayed with the basketball team because I would have:

• stayed with my passion

• been a part of something bigger than myself

• potentially made lifelong friends

Your Learning Moments

What were the uncertainties and the decisions you had to make? The “event” itself is typically obvious in retrospect but it is the steps we had to take leading up to the decision that I am speaking about here. Did you:

• Write pros and cons?

• Talk to friends or family?

• Go for long walks?

• Flip a coin?

How did you get to the point of making a decision? That’s what I suggest you write about and share with others who might be going through similar circumstances. Write about how you reached your decision and how agonizing that path was for you. That's a compelling story that will bring your reader along with you.

In looking back on my own example, I can see today that I made a wrong decision in college and didn't stay with basketball. I recall that I didn't talk this over with anyone and really only focused on the money I was going to make and how that would benefit me. While making money isn't necessarily a bad thing, my “job” at that point in my life was to be in college and to get the education for the career I envisioned for myself at the time. And one of my earlier career preferences was to become a high school gym teacher and coach! Do you think there’s a moral to this story (I’m smiling as I type this).

In looking back, we can see that if we had chosen another path our lives would be so different. And it is those reflective moments and choices that I think we can be sharing in our blogs. These are real stories about real people. Maybe not the stuff we read in headlines but certainly stories that are interesting to read. And these are also easy stories to sit down and write.

Tell your story and how you got to where, and who, you are today and people will read it…you’re reading mine right now.

Thank you for reading.

What else can we do really, at the end of the day if we haven't stuck with our passion we feel unfulfilled and somewhat empty. I can see times in my life when iv'e been afraid and fear has driven my decisions, reacting rather than thinking things through properly. Other times Iv'e acted on my passion and it's been scary to do so but the passion got me through the fear. Thanks Rick, you got me thinking. Robbie :)

It;s a shame that you didn't stick with your passion. I've done that myself and still regret my decision. You've given me at least a half dozen ideas that I could potentially write about. Thanks Rick & go shoot some hoops!

Thanks for reading. Once the snow is gone I can go shoot hoops on the outdoor court across from our house. Stick with your passion, too.
