If you have a business you should you create a blog about it? Will it help generate traffic to my site?
Fifteen to twenty years ago making money online was not so challenging as it is today. The internet was fairly new to most people who were purchasing their first computer capable of internet access. You could run a few adds here and there, send a few emails and get some response. Back then if someone ask if blogging help my business they likely wouldn't even know what you were talking about.
Today internet marketing isn't so simple. Competition from competitors is much greater and at the same time search engines have become more sophisticated. You have to have some way to get your product or service to those that are interested to buy. Blogging is a very effective way to do that and I'll share a few things how blogging has helped my business.
One thing you need to understand is that a blog isn't a sales page. This is one vital aspect many seem to miss when they first get into blogging. Someone just landed on your page looking for information. If I want to make money with my blog then I need to provide information they are looking for. If they see one big advertisement they are gone, and you've just lost a potential customer. Blogging will help your business if you give folks what they are looking for.
I'm not here to tell you how to write your blog but make suggestions on a few things to help generate traffic to your page. Blogging will help your business but you first need a way to have someone find it. The main way most will find your page is through entering a keyword on Google or some other search engine. And to get a favorable listing on Google you need to understand a little about search engine optimization, or SEO for short. Don't run! It's really not as hard that some would make you believe.
I'll go into this a little deeper on my resource page but you must carefully choose what keywords or phrase you will use in your blog, and how often to use them. Keyword density is very important with regards to search engine rankings. For blogging to help your business then one of the first things to consider is getting a favorable listing in a Google search. If your blog isn't on the first or second page of Google then chances of someone finding your page are very slim to none. Why is Google so important? 8 out of 10 people use Google as their primary internet search engine. Nuff said.
Another consideration in getting your blog a favorable listing in searches is having good backlinks pointing to your page. Backlinks are nothing more than having the URL of your site posted on other sites. The more relevant that site is to your information the better. One trick I use to find good sites to use to get backlinks is to take my relevant keywords and do a search with Google. Check out the sites listed in that search and see if there are forums or other means in that site to enter your blog URL. These listing are very high quality and targeted sites to get backlinks from.
Blogging will help your business by promoting your page to the many social networks. You definitely want to use these for backlink sites. To make money with my blog I use all I can. There are too many to list but you should target Facebook, Tweeter, and Google+ at the minimum. Search engine optimization isn't really all that hard when you understand what the engines are looking for.
There are other things to consider when writing your blog including how to properly use anchor links, meta tags, why and how to ping your blogs, how to find your keyword density and a few other things necessary to make your page search engine friendly. If you are not doing these things it will be very difficult for someone to find your page using search engines. These are just a few things to consider but blogging will help your business if you just follow a few simple steps that make your blog interesting to the reader and potential customer.

I can definitely say Blogging has helped my business. People do not know they are on a blog ad a lot of my visitors probably do not even know what a blog is...
Excellent article Kevin, very informative and helpful, I will be looking for the next few articles in this series.
Some great information here as well, thanks well done Gayle
Thanks for the good advice Kevin. I like the blog format because it's such a good way to personalize your message, and establish yourself as an authority on the topic. I also like the interaction with your audience. Tend to agree with Neil about backlinks. Right now, I rely on as good content as I can write, using appropriate keywords, and allow Google to do its thing with LSI and other stuff.
