A River Rafting Trip May Be Your Ideal Family Vacation

What could be better than the thrills and spills of a river rafting trip to get the adrenalin pumping and to bring the family closer together?

Adventure sports are increasingly popular the world over and whitewater rafting provides the perfect opportunity for family or friends to try an exhilarating outdoor activity with limited or no experience.

Just imagine navigating your way through majestic mountains, deep river canyons or beautiful countryside. You can shoot the rapids by day and camp out under the stars by night. For those who do not know, a modern raft is a purpose built inflatable boat. It is not some Heath Robinson construction of logs and oil barrels that you may have seen in old movies.

River rafting has come a long way since its conception as a watersport in the early seventies and is suitable for most ages and ability levels. It can be as easy or as challenging as you choose. If you have never been river rafting before, consider taking a short trip on a local river or stream to decide if you would like to try a longer journey. You can also try it on calm waters before tackling waters which are more difficult.

Waters are graded by degree of difficulty and risk. Grade 1 being easy with very few rough areas and Grade 6 extremely dangerous and potentially life threatening. To get the grading system into perspective and not to over concern you, relative novices and seniors are able to enjoy the thrill and speed of fast flowing waters as high as Grade 5. For Grade 4 and higher, you must be able to swim.

You will also need to be relatively healthy and fit for a more arduous trip. You do not need to be a professional athlete, but you must be strong enough to participate and enjoy your river rafting experience. Consider all these factors when booking your river rafting trip.

If you arrange your trip in advance of your vacation, take the opportunity to read up on river rafting expeditions so you know what to expect. It is also a good idea to get ready for your trip by taking exercise regularly so you are in reasonably good condition beforehand.

Naturally, your family's safety is paramount. You will need good waterproof clothing and safety equipment, in particular, a safety helmet and a life jacket. It is also sensible and normal to wear high visibility clothing just in case you do fall into the water. If you go on a trip with a professional adventure company, your guide, safety equipment and safety training should be included.

Small children should not be involved unless they go on very gentle waters, it is simply too dangerous. Ask the local experts for their advice and recommendations, as every stretch of water is different. The minimum age for river rafting varies, but it is possible to find trips suitable for children from 4 years of age.

There are of course many destinations to take your loved ones on a river rafting trip, from rivers close to home or to awe-inspiring locations like the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon or the Zambezi River in Africa. Do your research on the web prior to booking your trip and make sure you choose a reputable company to go with.

Remember, it is your vacation, so ask plenty of questions to make sure you know what you are getting. Seek clarification regarding qualifications, expertise, equipment, safety records etc., and be aware that price discounts are usually available for group bookings.

Above all a river rafting trip is about escaping every day routine and having fun in the great outdoors. Spend time doing it and fall in love with this exciting sport. You may never want to go on a beach vacation ever again.
