What better way to spend a beautiful day than off shore fishing in a boat. It might not be for everyone, but if you’re a keen angler or just want something different to do, then an off shore adventure of this kind can be a real thrill.
There are really only two ways to get offshore for a day’s fishing:
1) A fishing charter boat
2) Buy your own off shore boat
Fishing Charters
For the inexperienced or those not wishing to outlay the expense for a boat and fishing gear, then off shore fishing charters are definitely the way to go. These charters are perfect for group bookings, where you can get together for a day of male bonding with your mates, or take your family out for a new experience.
Charter boats are all equipped with an experienced skipper and crew, who not only know what they’re doing on the water, but they also know all there is about deep sea fishing. They will equip you with the best gear, the right bait, and they’ll know where the fish are likely to be biting.
Buy Your Own Off Shore Fishing Boat
For the more serious cashed up angler, you might consider purchasing your own off shore vessel if you plan to head out to the reefs regularly. So what are the main features to look for in an off shore fishing boat?
• Plenty of storage for fish, especially BIG fish.
• If the boat is made of stainless steel, make sure it’s of a high grade.
• Loads of fuel capacity. Out there on the high seas, the last thing you want to do is run out of fuel.
• You definitely want lots and lots of rod holders.
• Some shade. As much as fishermen may love the elements, everyone needs a break from the sun from time to time.
• Access to the transom so you can get your line around the outboards when bringing in a big catch.
• Pick the right hull. For deep sea fishing you’re best bet is a boat with a deep V or a powercat design.
• Choose a vessel that is extra tough and extremely well built. Deep sea anglers tend to push the limits, so buy a boat that can handle it.
Fish Galore!
The big advantage of getting off shore to fish is the size of the fish, the variety of the fish and the amount of fish to go after. Because they’re much harder to access, deep sea reefs are not as heavily fished as rivers, estuaries and beaches. This means there are loads more fish out there and, with the aid of a fish finder to locate the schools, you’re bound to be hauling the big ones aboard in no time.
When offshore fishing in a boat, what breed of fish you catch depends on the area you’re fishing in, but a few you might likely haul aboard include:
• Cobia
• Snapper
• Tuna
• Coral Trout
• Giant Trevally
• Cod
• Barracuda
• Red Emperor
• Marlin
• Sailfish
• Wahoo
• Mackerel
