There are several challenges which are unique to Amazon Kindle publishing, but one of the biggest and most common issues is that many publishers simply wait too long to get their content on the market. It’s a matter of over thinking things to the point that every little detail seems like an insurmountable challenge and the result is endless delays.
It’s a problem which I used to fall victim to myself. I’m something of a perfectionist and of course, I want my e-books to be the best. At the same time, it’s not always possible. You can’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good, since ultimately, it is readers, not publishers who decide what’s best.
Like any kind of writing, you need to keep your audience in mind as you write. You know (or you should know) who you’re writing for. The most important thing is to make them happy – only once you’ve done that can you afford to worry about anything else.
The reason I’m writing this is that I know that a lot of other e-book authors are going through the same things that I used to. You’re over thinking it. It doesn’t matter what kind of book you’re writing, it all starts with knowing who your readers are and what they want. Look at similar titles to find out what the competition is like, read the reviews and try to incorporate the things your audience is looking for as you write.
There’s really no need to spend a lot of time and money on lengthy writing courses. Writing, like any other art form, is highly subjective. Everyone writes differently and you’re not doing yourself (or your readers) any favors by carbon copying someone else’s technique. Speaking for myself, I know that my approach would drive a lot of other writers crazy; it’s all about finding what works for you.
What I’m trying to say is this: don’t over think it. Just sit down at your keyboard and start writing. The sooner you stop worrying and start actually getting words on the page, the sooner you’ll get your book published. Do your research if necessary and then start throwing out ideas to see what works. Is it going to be perfect? Almost certainly not; I got my first book out there so quickly that I had to go back and fix typos. However, just going ahead and getting it done taught me how the process works. It also taught me that every writer needs an editor (just trust me on this).
Writing is a process and you’re going to learn a lot along the way. It’s almost impossible to get everything perfect the first time around. What matters right now is to start writing and get your books published. Then do it again and again – that’s how you’ll become successful over the long term. If you'd like to learn more about publishing on Kindle, there's a ton of information out there.
