In this series of articles we looked at the rise of one of the greatest fighters of our time, Floyd Money Mayweather, as he continued to defy the odds in the divisions he fought in. Following his victory over Ricky Hatton, the world thought that they had seen the last of Floyd Mayweather as he announced his retirement from boxing. In this last article we look at the years during his retirement as well as the great comeback of the Money
Retirement and World Wrestling Entertainment
During the time while retired, he focused much of his energy on his promotional company. However Floyd would also appear on the World Wrestling Entertainment, where he had a short rivalry with the World’s Largest Athlete, the Big Show.
Mayweather broke Big Show’s nose in at the No Way Out pay-per-view, and as a result, the Big Show challenged Mayweather to a no-disqualification match at Wrestlemania 24. At the event Mayweather would prevail over Big Show, after he knocked Big Show out using brass-knuckles to keep his undefeated streak. This would not be the last time the World Wrestling Entertainment would see Floyd Mayweather since he would make a couple of more appearances, however towards the end of 2008 it became clear that the Money wanted to return to boxing.
The great comeback
And so it turned out because in May 2009, Mayweather was coming out of his 21 month retirement to face Juan Manuel Marquez in bout headlined as “Number One”. The Money showed no signs of ring-rust as he won the bout by unanimous decision.
After that Mayweather fought Shane Mosley in a bout that made headlines because before the fight both fighters agreed to Olympic style testing. During the fight Mayweather absolutely conquered Mosley after the second round with the fourth round standing out the most, when Mosley was trying to punch Mayweather but could not land a punch.
The Star Power Fight
In 2011, Floyd Money Mayweather would take on Victor Ortiz, with Ortiz being his first bout in 16 months. The manner in which this bout ended created a lot of controversy because Ortiz head-butted Mayweather on purpose, then the referee called for a time-out to deduct points from Ortiz. Mayweather and Ortiz would then touch gloves after the referee told them to unofficially resume the fight.
While the boxers touched gloves, the referee looked away, and Mayweather knocked out Ortiz. After the bout Ortiz claimed that he was “blindsided” by Mayweather, although in general the victory was legal since the two boxers had touched gloves.
Conclusion
Following his victory over Miguel Cotto in May 2012, Mayweather took his personal record to 43 wins and 0 defeats. Floyd Mayweather keeps rising, at the moment it is hard to foresee when Floyd Money Mayweather will actually be defeated. Without a doubt the man backs up his mouth every-time he steps into the ring. Therefore Floyd Money Mayweather can claim that he is the greatest fighter we have seen in the modern era.
