Victor Ortiz should be ashamed of himself for trying to apologize for an obvious intentional head butt that he delivered to Floyd Mayweather Jr. during their fight on 9/17/11 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand. I've never heard of anyone trying to apologize during a fight, especially right after they initiated "dirty tactics", to gain the advantage. What makes it even more ironic is the had in a mouth guard and speaking with a thick accent, bottom line poor communication.
I believe that if Ortiz would have played with class instead of using cheap shot antics he wouldn't have been subjected to a "fair-sucker punch". Watching how fast Mayweather hit him after their gloves touched reminded me of Michael Jordan. It reminded me of Michael Jordan in 1998 against the Portland Trailblazers; Scottie Pippen was at the free throw line and Michael Jordan was at the top of the key. Scottie Pippen shot the ball and missed and Michael Jordan flew in past everyone and dunked the ball home. Every since then NBA teams coach free throw rebounding differently. It was a play that has forever changed the game. Floyd Mayweathers Jr. K.O. punch was one that will forever change boxing and the training of boxers. I can hear corner men saying it now, "Don't get caught slipping like Ortiz on the break" or even better, "Don't get Ortized.
I have read where some people feel that Ortiz got a raw deal and somehow Mayweather cheated. I find that to be completely absurd, because even my 4 year old daughter knows that you are suppose to protect yourself at all times. Rule No#1 in the boxing manual, which is given to every boxer when they first decide to be a boxer, is PROTECT YOURSELF AT ALL TIMES!, this means you Ortiz. It is the same thing that the referee says to every boxer at the beginning of every boxing match. In addition, I can't forget that Ortiz started the dirty play with the head-butt. Ortiz should be thanking Mayweather because he could have killed him with a clean shot like that. The one thing that boxing and football have in common is that sometimes guys get knocked out and stay knocked out, they die. So, for all of Ortiz's family and fans you should write letters to Floyd Mayweather for not killing your star and family member.
Feeling bad for Ortiz should only be done by his fans and family, the fact of the matter is he got paid 2.5 million and can still talk. I imagine that any regular guy who hasn't been trained as a boxer would've had his jaw wired shut and been drinking through a straw for at least 5 months, as hard as he got hit.
As far as Floyd Mayweathers Jr's reputation and legacy are concerned, the fact of the matter is they are both untarnished. He handled his business protected himself at all times and made sure that his record stayed perfect. He doesn't owe Ortiz a rematch because the fight wasn't all that interesting. There were a few good pops but without that ending it could have easily went the distance declaring Mayweather the winner by decision. He was practically dancing all on his head with his gloves during the earlier rounds. Ortiz was simply another notch on the belt for Mayweather and nothing more. Floyd Mayweather Jr. should move forward and fight Pacquiao, because thats the fight that everybody really wants to see. Ortiz we thank you for the filler but you were just that, a filler.
