For your business, do you have a group or a fan page? Which one do you have? This is not a trick question, but I must say that I prefer a fan page, and I will tell you why in a minute.
Facebook Group for Business vs Facebook Fan Pages for Business?
Firstly, I have to say that groups are created for a specific purpose. For instance, these are real life groups on Facebook. I know of a group that promotes a comic book series, the owner has a team that he is working with and auditions will be held. Then there is one that is specifically for writers to social up other writer’s articles on the web. These types of groups are effective, because it has one specific purpose for everyone in the group.
An example of a bad Facebook group will be one that is for a business, and doesn’t have one specific reason or advantage on the actual group members. The reason why promoting your business as a group is not affective is because people will start promoting their stuff or business in your group, which will eventually take all eyes off of you and more so on other businesses within your group.
I don’t know if it is a pride thing or people are just scared to post on fan pages, because they feel like a fan page is specifically for that business, band, or person, and correct me if I’m wrong, but when was the last time you’ve seen anyone post up any promotional articles, events, or even websites on a fan page? It is very unlikely, because Facebook fan pages are more for that particular business. More than likely, folk will only like or comment on any valuable post they see of that fan page they are interested in and become social in it.
You may have both a fan page and a group, and that’s ok, but in my humble opinion, I guarantee that your group page has tons of people promoting their stuff and not your fan page.
Final Thoughts on the Subject
Which is better for business? It all depends on what you're using them for as I explained above. Now, if you don’t have a fan page or a group page and is very interested in creating a fan page, there a lot of helpful resources out here that will show you how to do it. Marketing on fan pages is not different from marketing on group pages. You must always provide 20% promotional stuff and 80% valuable stuff in order to succeed in your mission to build your brand. When you keep this in your mind, you will be more successful.
