“Technology” and “Change” – two words are separated by more than a thousand words in a dictionary. But in modern world, these two are inseparable. Effect of technology is visible in all sectors. Home Appliances and Furniture too. Designers across the world are experimenting to create furniture which will apt for tomorrow’s technology. In a way, these designers are creating furniture of the future.
Tech giant Intel showed how a decorative bowl can be used as a device drop spot in your home or at your office desk. Beneath the bowl, hidden, lays the magnetic resonance technology that helps to charge multiple devices simultaneously. Mike Bell, the VP and GM of Intel’s New Devices Group said in an interview in April, “We wanted to make charging cool”.
Bill is also expecting in next few years, many devices will be in the market with this kind of capabilities. The idea of resting and recharging was first realized at the Salone Del Mobile, the largest furniture fair of the world, in Milan in 2014. At fair, installed by Dutch design firm Studio Mak, Ventura Lambrate space stood the Cloud Table. People put their devices down on the Table and bring them back to life using the wireless charging pads implanted in the treated popular wood. Devices are also benefitted from the Wi-Fi signals boosters embedded under the table.
Marieke Kums, founder of Studio Mak, recently said, “Our primary aim was to design or create an environment at the Salone in Milan which would accommodate people’s needs for social interaction and passing information during the week-long design fair”.
That table used for workspace and meeting space. People arrived at that table to meet new people and laying their devices on top of it which seamlessly charged the batteries in it.
In densely populated cities across the world, space is undoubtedly one of the major issues that everyone faces and arranging of furniture can easily be compared with a frustrating game of Tetris. Keeping this in mind, today’s designers are aiming to solve create furniture that fit together all the necessities in a home without creating a sense of claustrophobia or clutter among the ordinary people.
Issues such as clunky power strips or a lack of power outlets will go to finish as new electronics get integrated into furniture. Furniture like the Herb sofa by Burak Kocak is going to become the ultimate couch for the modern, Internet-connected urbanites.
This new charging-station furniture will certainly bring a new and convenient twist on how the future generations interact with gadgets at home, work, restaurant or bar. The ability or potential to harness either natural energy or creating its own or both will change the dynamics and meaning of furniture in upcoming days.
The onus is on the designers’ shoulders of turning the inconspicuous and sophisticated technologies to create stylish, comfortable and multifunctional furniture which will become an integral part of people’s live.
