As the world is turning into an online global village, the need for internet connectivity is higher than ever. Telecommunications companies are competing neck to neck to provide consumers with an internet connection anywhere in the country. There are, however, many areas where an ISP does not have the conventional connectivity solutions. Reason could be the remote proximity of the areas where infrastructure costs outweigh the expected benefits. In such areas VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) connection is deployed.
VSAT connection, to define simplistically, is an internet connection through a satellite. This requires a set of equipment consisting of an antenna, a satellite modem, a BUC and an LNB to set up a basic VSAT connection. When installed this equipment makes a link to a certain satellite which is also connected to an ISP providing the internet services. This way without having to invest in the infrastructure costs of providing connectivity to remote or rural areas, telecom companies offer VSAT connection to the clients.
It is rather difficult to imagine areas without fiber connectivity in this day and age. But in any given country or a region there are many areas which are either less populated or population is scattered over a vast area. Here satellite connection is the only option available.
When satellite connectivity solution emerged in the markets, they were very expensive. For this reason it was mostly used by large organizations with their operations in rural or remote areas. For example Oil & Gas companies, financial institutions, NGO’s etc. were the major user group of this technology. With passage of time and advancement of technology, satellite services providers developed solutions that were cheaper and affordable by individual users as well.
Today a VSAT services provider not only caters to large organizations but also to individual user groups living in remote towns/villages. A major factor for this shift is the availability of satellite bandwidth and innovative technical development which resulted in cheaper hardware costs making it affordable for individual consumers as well.
Currently there are many satellite services providers offering a wide array of services to the businesses and consumers. Preference should be given to a service provider with experience in the industry and wide area of Satellite Coverage to offer.
It would not be an overstatement to say that today there is no place on the planet where one cannot to the internet to talk to their families or to have a business conference call.
