Saving Money for Vacations

How do you feel about saving money for vacations? Sounds easy right? Then why do so many people find it hard to save? If you find it hard saving for vacations you are not alone. Only 33% of working Americans took a vacation in 2011. Vacations are an important part of our life. Vacations give us time to relax and put our troubles out of our mind. At least for a little while. We have time to enjoy our families and have fun. It reduces our stress levels, which makes us much happier and healthier. I know what you thinking, sounds great but you still have a hard time saving money for vacations.

Most people do not know how to save money period. When it comes to saving money for vacations, there just isn't any money left. We have no clue how to get our finances under control. That can all change. There are proven ways for you to start saving money for vacations, and maybe even have a little fun in the process. Let me share some ways I manage to take great vacations.

Planning:

Start by planning your vacations. Decide where you want to go, and the things you would like to do on your vacations. Start planning your vacations as early as possible. Your best prices are usually found early, plus this gives you extra time with saving money for vacations. Stay grounded. Know your limitations when it comes to your budget. If you can't afford to take a trip to Europe, why would you even considering this as an option. Maybe you can only manage a camping trip or a staycation. OK, so what is the problem. I have taken many great camping vacations where I had a lot of fun.

Research:

Once you have some choices for your vacations, research your destinations to get some basic prices. Try to find out as much as possible about the area including lodging, activities, transportation and food options. Talk to friends or find travel forums to learn as much as you can from someone who has already visited the area.

Budgets:

So now comes the fun part. The secret to saving money for vacations is a vacation budget. I know what you are thinking, a budget, yuk. Trust me when I tell you that unless you have unlimited funds, a budget is a necessity for saving money for vacations. Once you have planned and researched your vacation, use a travel budget worksheet to fill in the estimates on the cost of your vacation. Once you get a total cost of your vacation, you can then break it down to see how much you will have to save each month until your travel date. Now the tricky part, how do I make a travel budget worksheet? Find more information on travel budget worksheets to help you with saving money for vacations. Just use the worksheet to help you budget your vacation.

Include the Family:

Let the entire family help the planning, researching and budgeting your vacations. Narrow down the options that you can afford and let the children help with the details. Let them know how much money it will cost to go on your vacations. Make saving money for vacations fun. Have them do an arts and crafts project. Suggest they make a vacation savings fund from an old jar or can. Let them decorate and label the jar "vacation". Then let them know the entire family will need to help with saving money for vacations. Display the jar where it is visible everyday to remind the family what you are working towards.

Including the children will help them understand the value of a dollar. Le them do odd jobs to help contribute to the fund. You will be amazed at their excitement to help with planning and saving money for vacations. We remember the old saying, "money doesn't grow on trees." It is not enough to tell our children, we must teach them also. If we don't know how to save money, how will they ever learn. Use your vacations as a great teaching tool to show your children how to budget money.

I don't want to sound like saving money for vacations will be easy. Sometimes you will have to make sacrifices. I catch myself quite a bit in a store looking at a new pair of shoes or purse, but I snap myself back to reality thinking of the wonderful vacations I have planned. When I am on our vacations having fun exploring a new place with the ones I love, I realize that it wasn't a sacrifice at all. Material things will come and go, but the vacation experiences and memories I share with my family will be with me for a lifetime.

I don't want to miss out on sharing these great times. As a child, I can remember my grandparents talking about retirement and all the traveling they would do one day. They are in bad health now and they did not get the chance to experience all of the wonderful places they dreamed of for years. Don't be one of the millions of people that miss out on vacations. I will leave you with the words of advice that I am often given, "have fun and enjoy life along the way."

Street Talk

What great ideas you have presented. I think that vacations help on so many levels and they really lift your spirits. I have been lucky to have been on an extended vacation for a couple of years. Although I didn't realize that it would be that long when I started or perhaps I would have planned it differently

Great ideas, Tracy! Haven't been on a, "Real Vacation!" for a while myself. What with one emergency after another, I'm not sure I would've survived a vacation:-) Hmm. Will take a peek into where I might like to go on a vacation someday. Picking a vacation early on is a good idea for planning. Had not even thought of doing so! Now that I've been walking more and more, I probably could handle a vacation at some point... blessings, Cynthia

Now you see how it shows on your site. What I want to comment on the article, is I have a friend that goes overseas on holiday every second year, their saving plan works like this. They borrow the money from the bank, and when they return they spend two years paying for the last trip. Now this works for them and they get away every two years to places I would love to visit. Their thought, to save is difficult but to pay off easy because it is a "have to event". I am so jealous when I hear they are off to places in the USA, England, New Zealand, Europe etc. My problem I hate having debt, But it works for them. Our saving with a low income is difficult and when a problem arises we spend the holiday money, making holidays destinations where we can afford to go with what we have and not always where we want to go. A great article, informative.

Sounds like your friends don't mind borrowing money and they are happy. I am like you personally and I don't like to be in debt. The interest I would save in two years would help me take another trip. We take wonderful vacations, but I do it a little different. I plan our vacations extremely early, sometimes a year or more in advance. I sit down with my budget worksheet and estimate the amount of money I will need. I then start making all of our reservations. I get great rates like this. I book the reservations in the order of what I know will go up in price first. I try to space the reservations out and pay them as I make the booking. That way I get a great price and I am paying for each category. Transportation, cruise fare, hotel, just depends on our vacation. Then I continue saving each month for everything else on my worksheet. By the time we leave I have everything paid for and we can just enjoy our trip.

Thanks AJ. I also did this with my son. He would gladly pass over most anything to get to go on vacations. Saving money is hard work and requires the entire family to be on board. It is much easier when you do your homework and set a budget. It gives you something to look forward to down the road. Saving for vacations is a great way to teach children about money.

Great ideas, Tracy. We went to Disney last October. Before our trip, my kids would beg me for little purchases when we went out to the stores. Each time I asked them, would they rather have [blank] or go to Disney. Disney was always the answer and they happily left the store with nothing. They got so used to this process that they do not frequently request things when we go to the store anymore. It's not 100% effective, but a decrease in ask request is a welcome addition.

Thanks Heather. I think most everyone has to budget and save for vacations. You just have to decide what is most important to each individual. Luckily my entire family loves to travel so we all try to pinch our pennies. Great idea with the online account. This can help the children see how everything is progressing. Good luck with your trip to Lego Land. I hope you reach your goal soon.

I did enjoy this article. It's close to our heart since most of our 'vacations' are back to my husbands country. Luckily costs when we get there are low but the other associated costs of getting there and travel insurance etc add up. A while back I got frustrated at the kids for spending every bit of money I gave them unthinkingly. I opened everyone an online (holiday) account including my husband and I. I told the kids most of their pocket money was saving for something bigger... to get us to Lego Land which we've all wanted to do. The kids were excited and now when they grumble I log in and we check our bank balances which are steadily climbing. We already have enough for the admissions! Great article! Many people could benefit from reading your wisdom.
