The Hidden Path to Unforgettable Vacations

Ask anybody around you:

What's the 1 thing you'd like to do more of?

9 times out of 10, the answer will be more travel. Individuals, couples, families - everyone wants to travel more.

As crazy as it may seem in this wild economy, travel is on of the few industries that's NOT in a recession. The economy is just making people get a heckuva lot smarter about how they do it.

A family typically has 3 options when it comes to travel-

1) Buy/rent a vacation home- One of the most expensive options. While it's great having "all the comforts" of home, you're typically not centrally located in your vacation area. If you're renting, you have a landlord who's not on site in case the need for repairs comes up. If you buy, you have anotle her mortgage to pay off, another home to maintain, pay taxes on, take care of the yard, rent out, etc.

Overall, it just doesn't have that "vacation feel" to it, and can get quite expensive.

Grade: D+ Just not do-able for the average family, too many head-aches, costs and limitations to deal with.

2) Timeshare- A very popular option. People spent $4.6B on timeshare in the U.S. in 2010 alone. However, the avg. price of $16,000 for just 1 week/vacation/year can be daunting for many families. Annual maintenance fees average between $600-$800/year, even if you don't travel. You're typically limited to one spot. However, many timeshare companies will allow you to trade out your "points" to other areas assuming qualifications are met.

Grade: C While still a very popular option, more and more people are trying to get out of their new "mortgages" with timeshare companies due to rising annual costs and maintenance fees and increased hoops to jump through like limited travel dates and confusing point systems.

3) Booking online through Expedia, Travelocity, etc. - This continues to be the most common method of travel for most families.

However, for most a growing number of people, the idea of a cramped hotel room for a week, or even a weekend (especially with children) isn't very appealing for a vacation. Not to mention the average family of 4 spends about $800/week eating out 2-3 meals/day while staying at a hotel. Most families come home from a "vacation" like this even more tired and broke then when they left.

Grade: C+ This seems to be the method of last resort for most families. Nothing else fits their travel budget, so they settle for endless online searches trying to find what they hope is the best deal with the free continental breakfast.

Up until recently, I was stuck on the travel treadmill described above. Then a good friend showed me a 'hidden path' that he and his wife and 4 kids use to take 3, 4 and sometimes even 5 vacations a year.

All of a sudden, I see vacations with my family in a whole new light... instead of an expensive headache to check off, we actually look forward to doing more of them.

However you decide to take your next vacation, just go! Some of the best memories I have, both from growing up and now as a parent, come from vacations with my family

Make it a great day, and elevate everything!
