Budgeting That Makes Sense

Budgeting does not have to drive you crazy or cause you to feel like you're in a vortex. Sometimes it is the small steps we take that create a big effect, so here are some tips to help you trim your budget without making you feel like you’re in chains.

Save on paper towels by buying the generic version of Zorbeez (those orange wiping clothes that are super absorbent). You can find them at your local dollar store and they will save you at least $3.00 per week, which is $156 yearly. I used to go through one roll of paper towels per day and now I use about three rolls per week. Most paper towels are about $1.50-$2.00 per roll. So if you're using one roll per day it comes out to $547.50 when calculating 365 days x $1.50. That is huge bucks going out yearly for a disposable item.

Make going out to eat more of an event by limiting it to once per week; especially if you have children. Not only will it make it more special, but children will learn to not take it for granted. After all, the average family of 4-5 people spends around $200-300 monthly by eating out several times weekly, which adds up to a whopping $2400 yearly if you calculate it at $200 per month ($3600 yearly if $300 monthly). So eating out once per week can seriously trim the budget, and choosing places like Taco Bell or Chick Fila can also help. And if the drink doesn't come with the meal, order water--it saves about $1-2 dollars each time, which equals $52.00 per year or $104.00 per year.

If you're addicted to Starbucks coffee or some other coffee house blend, consider buying Folgers’s gourmet coffee at the grocery store and buying a nice thermal cup to use. Whether it is Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks, those tasty little treats usually run about $2.00 each, and the average consumer buys about three per week. Grand total per year is a whopping $312.00! If you go with the thermal cup and Folgers’s, the cup will cost about $10.00 at Wal-Mart and the coffee about $5.50 per bag, which should last a month. Potential savings equals about $18 per month and $216.00 per year.

These ideas are not something that you have to work hard at or struggle over, and the total approximate yearly increase to your budget would be $867.00. That is not chicken feed! So I hope you're inspired to use these three simple tips to increase the amount of money you have to work with.
