Going green is not only becoming the hip and trendy way families across America are living their lives, it’s also smart and sensible. Recycling, composting, buying from farmer’s markets and local merchants, using energy saving appliances and switching light bulbs to CFLs are just a few of the ways that people have started to change their daily routine. But how many people actually think about the environment when they coupon?
Yes, how you choose to coupon for your weekly shopping trips is another way you can help Mother Earth. Traditionally, consumers have looked to circulars in the Sunday paper for grocery savings – ultimately, only cutting out the coupons they need or want. Today, savvy consumers have the ability to go on the Internet to online coupon sites like MySavings. These sites offer a directory of aggregated coupons for everything from disposable diapers to organic jam to frozen vegetables to cereal.
Another great way to help the environment is by sharing coupons with your friends and family the electronic way. A lot of sites offer multiple ways to “share” the coupon or discount offer via email, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and other social networking sites. In the old days, people would cut out coupons and sometimes, even mail them to friends and family through the postal service – costing money and wasting paper.
Why not start a coupon club at work or with your neighbors? Get together once a week and share extra coupons you have or coupons that are going to expire. Make sure each member knows a bit about your likes and your dislikes. Also, appoint someone to keep the different coupons organized, so that you're not wasting time and energy sifting through all of them. This is another great way to cut down on waste and be more eco-conscious when couponing.
By printing out only the coupons you want, you’re creating less waste than the old school days of having circular remnants sprawled across your kitchen counter. Take for instance the printable grocery coupons section of MySavings. They have printable coupons for everything from a Scotch fur fighter pet hair sweeper to Splenda to Blackmores Omega daily fish oil. Just make sure you print more than one coupon on each piece of paper. You can always turn the page over and insert it into your printer from the other end – getting more bang for your buck -- and cutting down on waste.
I stopped buying Sunday papers years ago because of how infrequently I obtained coupons I could actually use. I now use printable coupons all the time and love it. I look forward to the day when I can simply show a coupon through my phone and no long have to print and carry these things. I wish more stores allowed e-coupons!
