How to Save for Smokers

Income has been and will always be a huge part of our lives. The world seems to always revolve around money and we are constantly looking for ways to save and pinch pennies. This task is difficult for everyone and proves to be even worse for smokers. With packs of cigarettes at a raging $7.00 a pack in some states, it is hard to save money. There are a few ways, however, to combat this outrageous amount of money that is being spent every year.

Electronic Cigarettes

This has proved to be one of the best ways to save money on smoking and one of the healthiest. Purchasing a long term e-cigarette can become quite an investment at first. I spent over $200.00 on my first one built to last me forever. The nice thing about the e-cigarette is the choice to choose flavors and switch between them. Rather than inhaling smoke, you take in a water vapor that inhales and exhales just like smoke. When I first used this contraption, there were subtle differences between a real cigarette and the electronic one. There was however a weight change that I was uncomfortable with. I could not just hold the cigarette in my mouth as it proved too heavy for me to hold with my lips. Aside from that, I budgeted my costs and learned that once the rechargeable battery and such had been purchased, nothing over $200.00, the liquids to refill my e-cig only cost 4-5 dollars. With a few drops I learned that these liquids had the potential to last 6 months or more. That was a huge savings! To only spend 4-5 dollars every six months to refill you e-cig compared to a pack a day at $7.00 saved me loads of money. There was also a much cleaner taste.

Roll your own tobacco

I personally use this method now as I lost my e-cig and fell off the band wagon. The investment here comes in the rolling machine. You can choose to by the hand roller for no more than 7-8 dollars normally or purchase the heavy duty crank for over $70.00. I have had experience with the hand roller and assure you that it doesn’t last long and eventually destroys the cigarettes. Once the initial investment has been made you need to get your supplies. A box of 200 filtered tubes will run you no more than 5 dollars and a bag of tobacco can fluctuate depending on your preference. I’ve found that when buying a bag of tobacco that would last 200 tubes it runs me about $17.00. So that is a total of $22.00 at most for a carton of cigarettes compared to $60.00 or more for factory brand. It should also be noted that you generally smoke less when rolling your own cigarettes as it takes time to roll them. The savings cannot be ignored. If someone, for example, were to smoke a carton every week for a year they would spend $2880.00 a year on cigarettes if buying factory brand. However if someone rolled a carton every week using the “Roll your own tobacco” method they would spend $1056.00 minus the original $70.00 investment for a year. That is a savings of $1824.00 a year!

Quit Smoking

Of course the most preferred route by most is to quit smoking. Quitting smoking is hard and does not come easily for most. However, I cannot deny that this route will indeed save you the most and put a lot back into your pocket. The price for beginning a plan to quit smoking can cost you as well however. With so many different ways to quit smoking, you are bound to spend money for help via nicotine gum, hypnosis, patches and such. Your savings only comes in if you are successful with quitting though.

While for many smokers the ideal saving technique would be to drop the habit, most are unsuccessful. This doesn’t mean that budgeting and penny pinching can’t be accomplished however. There are all sorts of ways to save money if you are creative.
