How to Save Money on Holiday Baking

Do you wait until the last minute to purchase your holiday baking supplies? If so, you are probably spending more than you need to on your holiday goodies.

With the rising cost of baking items, it can cost a small fortune to make those delectable desserts.

Follow my tips and purchase your holiday baking ingredients early to truly save money on your holiday desserts.

Plan ahead

On average, products go on sale once every 4 to 6 weeks.

Make sure to stock your pantry with extras of your basic ingredients when they go on sale. Then you won't be paying full price because you had to buy them last minute.

Buy Generic

Try a brand that is different than your standard brand. Most of the time, you will not taste a difference if you use the store brand vs. a name brand.

Some people do prefer a specific brand of baking chips for their cookies. If so, save money on the other items (flour, sugar, butter, etc.) so you have money left to buy that preferred brand of baking chips (and catch it on sale!).

Nervous about experimenting? Bake a batch before the holiday and test it out. If you don't like the taste, you know you'll need the name brand ingredients for that recipe and can start watching for sales.

Buy in Bulk

We are members of a warehouse club and purchase many items in bulk.

Recently, I purchased a 72 oz bag of chocolate chips for $10. That's equivalent to 6 - 12 oz bags of chips, which are $2.50 a bag or more, a savings of about $5.

I also purchase a 16 oz container of vanilla extract (not imitation) for $6. At the store, a 2 oz container of vanilla is $4-$5, so this is a huge savings!

And these are just a few of the amazing deals that can be found in bulk.

Watch Your Circulars and Coupons

Many stores now have their circulars on the internet. Check them out each week to see which stores have the best deals on your baking needs.

Combine the circulars' sale items with online coupons you can print at home or the ones you clipped from the newspaper and save even more on your baking items! Saves money AND time!

Substitute Ingredients

My mom's famous pumpkin roll recipe calls for pumpkin pie spice, which is about $6 for an extremely small container.

I found a recipe for pumpkin pie spice and I had all of the ingredients but one - allspice - which was $3 for a small container.

In addition to the $3 savings, I will save even more in the long run because I will be able to make 4 or 5 times the amount of pumpkin pie spice with that allspice.

I also use a recipe for converting evaporated milk to condensed milk to save money as well. Keep your substitution list handy for other money saving opportunities.

Holiday baking can be expensive, if you let it. Use these tips to control your ingredient costs and your food budget will be better for it!

Oh you talented lady! Like Alfred, I am constantly amazed by the next thing I find you not only do but fit into your busy life! Your tips are awesome and I do look forward to opportunity to buy more in bulk soon. We don't do that so much here. No bulk outlets and storage in the heat is a problem with bugs!

Heather, I absolutely love to bake. Ever since I found a homemade butter cream icing recipe that I love, I refuse to let a family birthday go by with a store bought cake. I've made some fantastic cakes in the last two or three years. If I find time, I'll publish them on a wordpress somewhere for you all to see :)

Haha, Alfred, I am a master baker. Although I admit I have difficulty with wheat bread - still trying to perfect that one.

ooh! Share some others then. After breaking fast I've discovered that wheat doesn't do good things for me.

Cynthia, I have a fantastic Zucchini bread / muffin recipe and a Peppers Casserole recipe on Squidoo. I also have a "garbage can cookie" recipe (that's the cookies pictured above) and a Magic Cookie Bar recipe on Hub Pages. I have a vegetable soup recipe in the works, but haven't found time to finish it with the gardening / blogging. But it's yummy and easy! When fall comes, I'll probably put more recipes out there in my "free time" :)

Very true. When I have time, I hit those groups to see the lists of sales around town. Then search online for matching coupons and score HUGE discounts. It's a great way to stock the pantry!

There's a lot of truth in what you say John. Which is why I start holiday shopping in September - gives me time to score the best deals on my holiday presents as well.

Thanks for the repeat visit Rob. To really maximize your savings, you need to know what the average prices are, what the sales prices are, and buy extra when it's on sale to stock your pantry so you never pay full price!
