Saving Money On Children\'s Clothes - Leave Your Pride At The Door

Children are constantly growing, which means you are constantly buying new clothing for your kids. With the changing of the seasons, many parents become anxious as they realize that all of the clothes from last year no longer fit and a major shopping spree is in order.

Saving Money on Children's Clothes

I don't understand the thought process of the retail market, but most of the clothes that are available in your local store is for NEXT season and not this season. The one good thing about this is that by the time you are in the middle of a season, the clothing needed for that season is already on sale.

For instance, we are currently entering spring which means the stores are stocked with tank tops and swim suits for summer. It also means that anything still left over for winter is on DEEP discount.

Now is the time for you to hit the stores and buy up the last of winter's clothes. You are guaranteed to get them for half price, and in many cases they are 75% off or more. Just remember to buy the clothes in next year's size.

This is also when I purchase a handful of clothes for holiday presents next year for my nephews as well as my children. By getting them at 50-75% off, I can buy more things for them for less money!

If you do this at the end of each season, you will save a lot of money on your children's clothing. The best time to hit the sales is one month before the end of a season. So, early February is best for winter clothes, and early August is best for summer clothes.

Leave Your Pride At The Door

I grew up wearing plenty of clothes bought at yard sales and thrift stores. My grandmother volunteered at a thrift store, so she was always saving the best clothes that were donated in my size. While some people feel uncomfortable buying hand-me-downs for their children, I say WHY NOT?

As long as you are buying quality clothes that are gently used, there is nothing wrong with second hand clothing. It takes a little more effort to find these clothes at times, but the savings is worth it. In addition to yard sales, garage sales, and thrift stores there are many children's clothes consignment shops around the country. Not only can you purchase quality clothing for less, but you can also sell your gently used quality clothing through these consignment shops!

Clothing Swaps

Finally, I want to discuss networking as a way to save money on your children's clothing. There are two ways to do this. You can create a network of 5-10 families who get together with each changing season to swap clothing they no longer need. Or you can find individual families to swap with.

In a family swap, each family brings children's clothing they no longer use. The clothing gets placed around the room in bags or bins organized by size. Then, each family can choose which clothing they wish to take home based on their individual needs. Any clothing that is not claimed can be donated to charity.

In an individual swap, you find families with children similar in age to yours and swap clothing with them. For instance, my daughter is older and my son is younger. By finding a family where the son is older and the daughter is younger, we are able to swap the older children's clothes to provide clothing for the younger children. In this instance, it cuts the clothing bill in half as you are now only shopping for your older child.

There are many ways you can save money on children's clothing. It takes a little bit of effort and a little bit of creativity, but it is worth it!

Street Talk

There is very few things my kids have that are brand new and most of them were on sale as you wisely noted. I buy a year early and end of season too. I save new for things that matter like good school shoes and underwear! I think the key to lots of great hand me downs is being openly grateful. When people know their offering hasn't offended you they'll offer clothes again and again!

Great point, Heather! We have a friends who pass down a handful of clothes now and then. I make sure my daughter or I write them a thank you note, and in the case of the lovely dresses from my aunt, I send her pictures of my daughter wearing the dress. Eagerly accepting beautiful hand-me-downs are key. Kids grow too fast for the clothes to only have one life.

That is the way we did it growing up. Our daughters did not want any part it that. They wanted the in things. Now that they are on their own, they get them the cheapest way they can. Go figure

Daniel, I expect I will receive more resistance from my kids when they hit the teenage years. However at 3 and 6, they only care about how cute or comfortable it is. Your comment gives me an idea though. Perhaps I give them a clothing allowance once they get older. Once they are paying for the clothes themselves, it's a whole other ballgame!

Why not indeed, children grow so quick, that as you say buy today for next year. Hand-me-downs wore plenty of them, today give me and old comfortable short pants and shirt I'm happy. But then my wife does say I'm a bit sloppy. Pride while a kid is young is expensive.

My aunt is a garage sale queen. She sends a box of little girls dresses at the end of every summer and they are the most adorable things I've ever seen. I always offer to pay for them, but she gets them all for pennies so she doesn't mind spending a few dollars on these cute outfits. Most of the dresses are Easter and Holiday dresses that are $30 or more in the stores. Gently used and cared for clothing look just as good as store bought if you make the effort to seek the cream of the crop.
