To Pin Or Not to Pin - What is Pinterest And Why Should You Use It?

Pinterest is an online social networking site where you maintain virtual bulletin boards. Your boards are available for everyone to see, and repin (save to their own boards), unless you change your settings to keep them private.

How to Join Pinterest

In order to create your own virtual bulletin boards, you must be invited to join by someone who is using Pinterest. There is also an option to request access through the website itself but it can take up to a week (or more) for your access to be granted.

The fastest way to join is to have someone send you an invitation. If you don't know anyone who is using Pinterest, send me an email (my address is listed in my profile) and I'll send you an invite.

The Setup Process

In order to log into Pinterest, you must use an existing Facebook or Twitter login. I chose to use my Facebook login.

During the account creation process, you will be asked what topics interest you. When you select these topics, Pinterest will have you start following a few people that are considered experts on these topics.

The experts generally have thousands of followers and post regularly with great content. Pinterest will also give you the option of following the boards of your Facebook Friends who are already using Pinterest.

This was something I loved during the process as I didn't have to go searching for my friends' boards.

How to Use Pinterest

To put it simply, Pinterest is a way to save the links to website you want to visit again - in picture form.

You can pin articles, recipes, gift ideas, party or wedding planning ideas, arts and crafts projects, workout routines, travel plans, teacher lesson plans, the list is endless.

I chose to create two accounts on Pinterest, one for my business efforts and one for my personal items.

The items I generally keep off my business boards are kid's arts and crafts ideas, most recipes, other uses for everyday products (like the top 10 uses for vinegar), home decorating ideas, and other do it yourself ideas.

Many money saving tips can be found in these topics. You really can save a lot of money with the information that circulates on Pinterest.

For those that are budget conscious, this is reason alone to join Pinterest.

You will quickly find people who provide great information that will save you money. Begin following them and each time they post a new idea, it will show up on your Pinterest home page for you to review or repin for later use.

Here are the business boards I use the most:

  • Things Worth Reading
  • Great Blogs
  • Products I Love
  • Gardening
  • Healthy Recipes
  • Sinful Recipes
  • Internet Marketing Education
  • Weight Loss and Healthy Living
  • Canning and Food Storage

I use my boards to pin articles that I write as well as articles written by others that are worth referencing in the future. Most articles end up on my boards: "gardening", "canning and food storage", "weight loss and healthy living". If I cannot find a category for the article, I pin it to "things worth reading".

In addition to pinning articles on these boards, I increase my following by pinning other things of interest. I am always watching for other gardening ideas, exercise information, or canning recipes to mix in with the articles.

I find that balance is important and in my opinion, only 20% of your pins should be self-promotional, and the rest should be promoting others or information that you think your followers will enjoy as much as you do.

I find the "internet marketing education" and "great blogs" boards to be extremely important. Instead of having blogs or articles clogging up my bookmarks and never being able to find what I'm looking for, the pins with a picture and description that I add helps to quickly find what I need. It also shares great information with others that are seeking it.

If you are going to use Pinterest for business, make sure to use SEO.

Keywords on picture descriptions as well as in your bio are being picked up by Google. It's another, great way to build backlinks for your work.

It's also important to use pictures in your articles and websites that are attractive and inviting. People will repin your work simply because of the picture.

Pinterest is Fun!

Once you get involved with Pinterest, you will realize that there is a tremendous amount of information being shared through this website.

It is interesting to see what goes viral and what does not. Sometimes, it will surprise you, but that's what makes it fun!

Use Pinterest to increase your knowledge of a topic, or find ways to save money by learning other uses for everyday things. You can learn how to recycle clothes, plastic bottles, and tin cans into rugs, cell phone cases, or decorative pots. The things I have learned and the money I have saved is tremendous. AND my articles (as well as others here on Street Articles) have received more traffic from Pinterest.

This is a good article. I'm a fan of Pinterest and use it a lot. I still think it has a long way to go as many pinners are not exploring all the possibilities - many of which you mention.

Pinterest is my favorite social network. I can spend hours in there, it's so addictive. I know how to change the cover of each board, but how do you change the order? Good article AJ. Thank you.

Hey AJ! I wanted to ask you...since you know more than me about Pinterest...I know there's a way to re-arrange your boards but can you also re-arrange your pins??? Thanks.

Unfortunately No. At least not that I've found. I've tried before, but they seem to be in chronological order. When I've wanted to rearrange them, I've ended up repinning them, which is a pain so I gave up. One think you can do is change the "cover pin" on your boards with ease and as you said rearrange your boards. Maybe Pinterest will add that option in an upgrade!

Thanks for letting me know....I thought so cuz I couldn't find a way to do it but it never hurts to ask. :) Hopefully they will make this available in the future. I do change the cover pins...you're right...gotta love those little helpful windows that guide you along...thanks again. You're a Doll!

Once again, AJ, such an excellent article. You put it all together for me in such a clear and useful way- I've wondered about Pinterest and if I should join, if it would be helpful, how I would use it and etc. All questions answered. Thanks!

The Pin is Mightier than the sorted others. "Most importantly ‐ right now Pinterest is driving more traffic to websites and blogs than YouTube, Google+ and LinkedIn combined (according to content sharing site Shareaholic.) And now Pinterest is driving more referral traffic to websites than Twitter, too!" (Pinterest Marketing Guide - by Beth Hayden) Well Done AJ Thanks.
