A Real Plan To Lose The Belly And Get A Set Of Six Pack Abs
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

So you have finally made up your mind and decided to dump that beer gut, get in shape and hopefully be able to show off a set of six pack abs. Now what? Well, first and most obvious, especially in the mirror, is to get rid of all that excess belly fat. So what is that gonna take? Besides hard work and good nutrition, it will take knowing which exercises to perform.

A good diet plan is probably the best place to start. You need to get your calorie intake under control. Not knowing your starting point, your original diet plan or your activity level, it is hard to give out hard and fast numbers. Here is an example though: For a man over 30 years old, under 6 foot, with a moderate activity level (i.e. mostly a desk jockey, but gets out for some basketball or tennis on a couple times a week or so) begin with a plan of 1500-1800 calories a day. For a bigger, younger or more active man, tack on a few hundred calories. For a woman of about the same age, moderate height and same activity level, drop the calories down to 1000-1200 per day. This should give you enough intake in order to have the energy to go on, but limit the excess calories that aren’t being used and turned into fat.

The type of foods eaten is just as important as the number of calories taken. Focus on vegetables, fruits and lean meat. Try and maximize protein and minimize fat. Suggestions are Egg substitute, shrimp, tuna fish and cottage cheese. Avoid fried and processed foods like the plague. Don’t even look at a McDonalds or other fast food restaurant. Consistency is going to be the biggest key to succeeding with a diet. One hint is to give yourself a cheat day. Schedule it regularly about once week, a day you can have all the foods you were craving the rest of the week. Another hint is when you fall off the wagon and have something not on your diet and not during your cheat day, don’t beat yourself up for it! Accept it happened and work to do better, but by no means give up.

The really hard work will come with the exercise program. When the body takes in more calories than it can use, it stores the excess as fat for a later date. Now comes the time to use up that stored excess energy. The body however doesn’t necessarily like to give up its fat, so it is going to require a lot of exercise to burn it off. The best advice here is to find something that works for you, whether it is a cardio class, a yoga class, resistance training on your own, a circuit type workout or even high intensity interval training. You need to have something you know you can and will do, because you will be doing it a lot. As with the diet, consistency is the name of the game. Going to the gym once a week is not going to get it down. Some type of exercise needs to be done every day. Remember that a combination of the training programs listed above can be done as well and it is highly recommended that at least some resistance training be performed as this will help to sculpt the body.

While this is a very general guide, by taking the hints and tips presented here and designing a consistent diet and exercise program, you will soon start to see the fat melt away and your new body complete with 6 pack abs emerge.
