Alcohol And Training

A big question today is how much alcohol damages your health and your training. With this article I will try to give you an impression of what alcohol does to your body in terms of training and common health.

Alcohol is a thing that we have been enjoying for centuries and I do believe that most countries are large scale consumers today. We keep hearing that the young people around the world gets way too drunk way too often, and on the other hand we hear that a few beers a day actually can be good for your heart and circulation in a whole.

Let’s have a look at what happens when we consume alcohol and what it does to us.

Ethanol or alcohol as most knows it is a small molecule that is dissolvable in both fat and water and by that it is obtained by the body very fast. After the ethanol is obtained it is evenly distributed throughout the body. Most of the ethanol stays in the lever where it is converted by enzymes to the substance of acetate which then can be included in the body’s energy metabolism. Before the ethanol is converted to acetate, it is converted to the substance called acetaldehyde which is poison and known for giving us the wonderful hangovers.

It is a myth that physical activities increase the alcohol metabolism. You will never get a lower blood alcohol level by running a few miles or anything like it instead of staying on the couch. The lever takes care of the alcohol metabolism and does this in a steady flow.

Let me put it straight, alcohol does not improve physical performance but more likely reducing it. This has been tested in the cycle sport and also with running, which has both proven to be a reduction in performance. So my conclusion and advice is to leave alcohol when exercising whether it is running or weight training.

Heavy drinking is bad for your health and will cause cirrhosis of the liver in the long term. But in short terms with heavy drinking you will have problems digesting your nutrients and this is vitamins and minerals. Besides that your blood vessels expand when you are drunk, which can make the walk home on a cold night fatal. This is because expanded blood vessels give increased body heat loss.

But what about moderate drinking, is that bad for your health as well?

Well if trying to prevent cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes moderate drinking could be ok. But if you want to help preventing cancer, you do not want to drink too much as this has proven to increase cancer in the chest and the large intestine.

The conclusion must be that alcohol should be prevented specially when focused on fitness training or other type of exercises. Large amounts of alcohol will lower your testosterone level for 24 hours or more which will have a bad influence on your exercising result. Alcohol hinders your body from burning off fat and hangover training won’t benefit you the same way that a normal training would. My advice is to minimize the alcohol usage in general both for your training and for your health.

Thanks for the read. Everyone will chime in on this one, and both be supported with true research. If I'm training intensely for something though, and I am still drinking, I would think a priority would be to be made at the very least.

I could not agree with you more alcohol and exercise have no related benefits. As a drinker of note years ago, I can tell you it is not even good for you at a social function unless you can control your intake. Drunkenness in youth is an easy route to alcoholism later in life, beware from one who has been dry for 23 years.

You are right Rob. I must admit that I do like a cold beer after a hard day of work. However it is important to know what it does to the body if exercising because it can be the reason for not reaching your goals. In Denmark we are around 6 million people and statistics says that we have over 500.000 people who are consuming way too much alcohol. That’s a bit scary :-)
