There are many different body building products out there on the market. Everything from supplements to fitness equipment. It's hard to know what you should or shouldn't purchase, what will be effective and what won't. I am going to help you out a little bit on trying to decide what to look into.
First off, we are going to take a look at some equipment. If you are wanting to build muscle mass, you are going to need weights. If you are a beginner, you can get by with buying a cheap set of the concrete or sand filled weights to start off with. However, if you have been doing it awhile and/or are planning on continuing to do weight training, you may as well spend the extra money now and buy an olympic weight bench, bar and plates. These are made to last and most sets come with 300 lbs. of weight. If you need more, you can purchase extra plates individually.
For your Cardiovascular exercise, it's not really necessary to purchase anything. There are so many different things that you can do for cardio. A lot of people choose to jog, ride a bike, or play sports that they enjoy. I myself enjoyed boxing as my cardio exercise. I had to purchase a heavy bag, speed bag, and a stand to do my cardio at home but it saved me money in the long run. I had no membership fees to pay, didn't have to drive anywhere and didn't have to work around anyone else's schedule. If you are into the treadmills and elliptical machines, you can either go to the gym or purchase one for home. If it's not something that you are too serious about, just go to the gym. If you are going to do your weight training long term, it'll save you money to get equipment for home.
Now comes the supplements. These body building products come in many different forms. There is so much to choose from how can you know what works and what is a "fad". Well, It's hard to know exactly what will work for each individual. Every one is different and not all will get the same results. Start out with the fundamentals, then if you want to experiment with other body building products, add one at a time and see what the results are. The most common supplements are whey protein, creatine and BCAA's (branched chain amino acids) such as L-glutamine. I recommend starting with these and go from there.
This should help guide a lot of you as to the body building products that you should look into. When buying your supplements, buy from a reputable company so you know that you are getting exactly what you are paying for.
