Bodybuilders 40 years and over.

Bodybuilding has long been at the fore of the fitness movement, the over 40 years Physique Contest has always been a popular way of showing, what bodybuilding can do for one's physical and mental self.

It turns out that not only were body builders looking good at age 40, but today's Mr. Olympia Contest had many competitors, superstars in their forties and some are going into their fifties.

Mr. Olympia Master for 2001, was Vince Taylor who is 52 yrs, old. You would have difficulty guessing the age of competitors, or a person who keeps himself fit through weight training , by just looking at their bodies.

As we age, the skin looses its elasticity in part due to the hormonal production slowdown. However premature aging and wrinkling is the result of fitness or disease.

Most of our bodies strength and functions, reaches their peak by the age 20 25 years, and gradually decline. By age 60 the average person has lost 25-30% of muscle mass, and some bodily function. Age related losses in bodily function decreases, through vigorous exercise, which decreases body fat, increase lean muscle mass, improves oxygen uptake consumption.

Convincing people, that weight training can bring about all these marvelous changes, or keep the aging process from getting out of control in the first place, is proving a battle. About 30 years ago, most athletes would not touch weights. But today all athletics in major sports are using weights to improve their performance.

For total fitness, the bodybuilder should combine aerobic exercise, such as jogging with his weight training programme. Jogging is a good aerobic exercise because it slightly improves leg strength, in the quads and lower back area. It also enhance lungs, heart and blood vessel to deliver oxygen to the muscles.

The only drawback, is jogging on hard surfaces, which soften the knee cartilages and causes such injuries as shin splint and heel spurs, however for some people they may never receive these injuries. But if jogging is your hobby and a means of staying fit. I would suggest that you go jogging in the sand on a beach, it has done wonders for me.

Most of you are wondering about the benefits of Weight Training, as it apply to people in general. (a) It increase strength and bodily functions. (b) Endurance: the ability to execute, many brief strength task, such as leg curls during extended time period. (c) Flexibility: muscle developement that pull on bones, and not stressing joint, while allowing full motion movement. (d) Nutrition: improves proper diet for the most efficient maintenance and construction of cell tissues, in the body.

Having suffered an injury whilst playing sport in my last year at school, the doctors recommended weight training and exercise. I did this religiously five times a week and found myself much fitter and stronger, in fact it was quite addictive. But as age crept on and marriage entered into it became less of a priority. I now do a lot of physical work in the garden and find my strength still good, however I'm by no means fit, yet I'm still fairly pleased with my body shape, if I could just get rid of the small protrusion above my belt without giving up the good stuff of life, that would be a bargain for me at age 62.

Dear Rob, Having competed in bodybuilding and powerlifting, i do not have as much time to exercise as i use to. But i know that exercise is extremely important, and it is for this reason i do the basics, walking. I know as you become older, your body become weaker, and if you don't take care of it, you will spend your little nest egg to doctor. There is not much you can do with regards to your protrusion above your belt, you can reduce the size, but the days of showing off a flat stomach, have disappeared with our youth. Our only alternative is to enjoy life, and take care of what is left of ourselves.
