So what does it take to get a six pack? This sign of physical fitness is achieved when the abdominal muscles are easily visible on the naked upper body of a person. Because of the formation of the muscles themselves, the muscle group resembles a six pack, hence the name.

Although it is commonly thought to be achievable by spot training and working with fancy exercise equipment, six pack abs can only be achieved by hard work and a good diet plan. The hard work generally involves cardio work in order to lose body fat and allow the abdominal muscles to be exposed. This work, done properly and consistently is half the formula to achieve the six pack goal.

The second half of the formula is good diet plan. There are many plans available and many vendors with their magic supplements or health drink mixes, even companies with full meal plans. And they all will work. Celebrities are often on commercials touting products that include all meals and all foods you will need, shipped directly to your house. These plans do work and will work for you, but they are expensive and not always easy to follow, not because of the difficulty of following the plan but because the food grows boring or unsatisfying both in taste and variety and cheating begins.

On the other side of the coin, there are plans that are supper effective, but once you start, you find the foods, while healthy and you can have a much as you want, is nearly inedible. There are many plans like this out there and they claim to be for a healthy lifestyle. Now if you like all the brussel sprouts you can eat and boiled cabbage or rice cakes, these will be awesome. But for those that seek more appealing diets, even if it means taking longer to lose the weight you want, here are some tips to follow in creating a solid diet plan:

  • Instead of 3 large meals a day, eat 6 smaller meals at regular intervals. Each meal should be much smaller, but still contain enough food and calories to satisfy the appetite.
  • Cut back on the carbohydrates. Many people have tried to eliminate carbs entirely, and that will work. Carbohydrates are meant as the fuel for the body, so total elimination may cause a reduction of energy and impact attention spans, enthusiasm and the exercise program.
  • Eat lots of vegetables. Nearly all vegetables are high in nutrients, low in calories and add flavor to the diet.
  • An apple a day keeps the doctor away. This little rhyme is true enough, and leads to the next tip: fruits are good for you and will have the sweetness you will be craving as you find a distinct lack of sugar in your new diet.
  • Don’t forget the protein. Most protein rich foods such as beef, nuts and eggs are also high in fat, which can be counter to your objectives. But protein is the building block of the body. Remember that muscle burns fat even while at rest, so have a large muscle mass helps keep the body lean even without a ton of cardio.
  • Have a cheat day. The body is programmed to maintain itself, if it senses a lack of food , i.e. a diet is started and calories go down, it will actually start to horde the calories it does get, in order to prepare for the famine it assumes is coming. This calorie storage will be in fat, which is what is exactly what we are trying to eliminate. But it takes a little while for the body to sense the lower calorie intake and react, so you can fool the body by having a higher calorie cheat day about once a week. This cheat day should include some of the items that were being avoided on non-cheat days such as processed or fried foods. The most important thing is not to go overboard and make sure everyday doesn’t turn into a cheat day!

There are a few more things to include for a diet plan to be effective. One is hydration, water is the key to life itself and without it everything would die, so make sure to drink at least 64 oz a day.

Fiber is another key, although with a diet high in fruits and vegetables, it should take care of itself. Also, as it hasn’t been stated before, make sure you are both eating healthier and eating less. Make sure you are actually reducing the calorie intake, although again, as with the fiber, with the guidelines above reducing calories should not be a problem.

Six Pack Abs are much sought after, but all too often not achieved. The reason is not that gaining them is so hard, it’s simply that so much misinformation and alternative programs are available, the people are unsure of how to proceed. The reality is, if fat is lost through a proper exercise program and with an effective and reasonable diet plan, the six pack abs that are being sought after will pop out for all to see.
