Six pack abs is a standard term in today’s fitness world. The term is used as a description of the appearance of the abdominal muscle group in physically fit men and women. When body fat is at a low enough level, this group of muscles are clearly seen as a grid, with a vertical line down the center of the midsection, with two or three horizontal lines which separate the abdominal area into something reminiscent of a six pack.

This six pack appearance of the abdominal group is one of the most sought after symbols of physical fitness. Most people understand that you can’t really build abdominal muscles, just expose them. With that understanding has come many outrageous claims on how to find ways to bring them out.

The first question is what are they hidden underneath? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that the abdominal muscle group is hidden behind belly fat. Therefore to expose the sexy six pack abs everyone want, belly fat must be lost. Many outlandish systems have been introduced to target areas for fat loss, everything from pill s and supplements to rollers and other crazy equipment.

Unfortunately, body fat doesn’t work that way. Fat cannot be targeted by area; it basically has to be lost all over. This leads to the conclusion that the only way to expose the natural six pack abdominal muscles is to follow a proper diet program and work an effective cardio program.

The term “cardio” refers to exercise which is performed with the objective of raising the heart rate, which in turn burns calories and hopefully taps into the bodies’ fat reserves. The general view on cardio is that it requires hours and hours on a treadmill or pedaling a stationary bicycle in order to achieve results. This type of cardio, given enough time and done consistently enough will achieve results.

The problem with this type of cardio exercise is that it takes a great amount of time and energy and it basically destroys the body in the process. A far better solution is called interval training. Interval training involves short bursts of high intensity exercise followed a short rest period. Done in a series of sets, this can achieve the same results as hours on a treadmill, but without the wear and tear on the feet, ankles, knees and hips that the low intensity, long workouts create.

Examples of this can be seen in pictures of runners. Take a picture of a marathon or cross country runner and set it side-by-side with a picture of a sprinter. Notice the almost emancipated look of the long distance runner, while the sprinter looks muscular and healthy. Both have six pack abs, but what would you rather look like?

So what would and interval training program look like? My personal favorite is a hill workout. Our driveway is steep, with a 15 degree incline and about 60 yards long. But any hill steepness or length can work. Starting at the bottom of the driveway, I sprint to the top, working as hard as I can, pumping my arms to help me go faster. Once at the top I walk around in a small circle just to catch my breath a little and wait for the burn in the legs to go away. I then walk to the bottom of the driveway. That is one rep. Do three to five reps in a set. Do at least on set every other day.

This is just one type of interval training, there are many more and of course you can make up your own. In fact variety is great for this type of exercise, create several interval programs and rotate amongst them. Make sure a do what you are capable of and do not push yourself to injury, and by all means consult a doctor before starting any exercise program. However, once you find the interval training cycle that fits you and that you enjoy, I’m sure you will be fitter, stronger and be able quickly to expose your Six Pack Abs!
