How Much Protein Is In An Egg

Since the big craze of whey protein that has swept the fitness world over the many years, new and young people who come into bodybuilding have no understanding about food and which have good high quality protein(s) in them for muscle growth.

Back in the old days it was eggs that ruled. This plain odd shaped object has enormous potential for your muscles, and also so versatile in the kitchen. You would never see a scoop of protein powder being poached,ha.

How much protein is in an egg?

It would make it easier if eggs were printed with nutritional facts on them...Hey maybe thats a million dollar idea! I better patent that,ha. But seriously how much protein is in an egg?

You will be surprised, drum roll please......One large whole egg contains 6.5g of protein, If you only eat the white your looking at around 3.6g.

3.6grams of protein in an egg white, now thats worth using. Have 4 large eggs, one with the yolk and the rest only there whites and your looking at just over 17g of good quality protein. Add a slice of wholemeal toast and your well on your way past 20grams.

So next time you think about skipping a meal and having a protein shake instead, crack some eggs and feed your hunger, don't mask it.

Where is the protein in an egg?

The whole egg contains all the protein but you have to be careful, because the yolk contains all the fat but the least amount of protein, around 2.5 grams.

How much protein is in an egg, based on size?

  • Small 38g: 5g protein, 4 g fat, 54 cal
  • Medium 44g: 6 protein, 4 fat, 63 cal
  • Large 50g: 6 protein, 5 g fat, 71 cal
  • Extra-Large 56g: 7 g protein, 6 g fat, 80 cal
  • Jumbo 63g: 8 g protein, 6 g fat, 90 cal

Egg yolk contains fat, is it still healthy to eat?

Eggs are totally healthy to eat if you just eat the white. But the yolk contains lots of vitamins and minerals including A & D vitamins, so its unfair to miss out on those. If I was to have 4 eggs, one of them would be a full egg and the rest whites. This ensure you get the best of both parts of the egg, helping you avoid a high amount of saturated fat that is found in the yolk.

Cholesterol.

Eggs do have a high cholesterol level but today we know cholesterol in food doesn't affect blood cholesterol, the perpetrator would be the saturated fat.

Final word

Don't be afraid of eggs anymore and remember they are very versatile in the kitchen, quick to make, quick to eat and not forgetting, packed full of protein....Oh yes!
