How To Get The Most Out Of Your Workout

Whether you are working out to shed pounds, tone yourself up, get stronger or gain lean muscle, there is one thing you can't do without and that is pre and post workout nutrition and preparation.

Proper nutrition before and after you workout can make or break your success with whatever exercise routine you are currently on. Pre and post workout nutrition plays an important part in optimal muscle functions, nerve functions, and muscle repair. Even the timing of your meals can have a dramatic impact on your goals. If you eat the right things at the right times, you can fuel your muscles for the workout, and restore your muscles after your workout, so that they recover for next time that you workout. It is safe to say that meals should not be thought of in terms only of overall intake during the course of the day, but of WHEN you eat. How to get the most out of your workout is dependent on whether you follow these simple nutritional rules.

What to do before a workout:

You should always start your day with breakfast. This will "kick up" your metabolism. While you slept, your body slowed your metabolism down. But bear in mind that you should wait at least 3 to 4 hours prior to doing any workouts. 20 to 40 minutes before starting your workout routine is when you should eat a snack high in carbohydrates. Doing this will allow ample time for digestion so that it can provide fuel for energy that you will undoubtedly spend during your workout routine. This will fuel your muscles. Don't consume things high in fiber or in fat before a workout because this won't fill muscle energy stores (glycogen) like carbohydrates would. Eating high fiber or fat content foods may also cause an upset stomach because of slow digestion and it will impair your performance.

What to do after a workout Post-workout

First off and most importantly you must rehydrate. Chances are you sweat quite a bit during your workout and those fluids need to be replaced. You should also give your body a 5 or 10 minute cool down to get your heart rate back to normal, and lower your body temperature. This helps prevent blood pooling, cramping and muscle soreness. Stretch after this cool down. Most important, even though it goes against your very nature, you must eat. You need to re-fuel and restore your energy. This needs to be done within ninety minutes after a workout. What you eat is very important also. It should be a meal high in protein. This will aid in muscle recovery and repair. Those protein shakes that you hear about that muscle builder’s drink after a workout are great and they are even if you are only toning and not building muscle. I happen to love Jullian Michael’s Whey Protein Triple Chocolate Shake variety. It is delicious if you mix it in a blender with some ice and a banana after. Really hits the spot.

How to get the most out of your workout is by being smart before and after, with the right nutrition and preparation, you will succeed in your goal of total body health whatever the level of your training!
