Being an "ex-skinny guy", I know how it feels. You hate your body, you're scared of getting bullied and you probably don't think that you'll ever get a chance with that beautiful girl over there. And you've decided to workout and build some muscles! That's a great step which will take motivation and action to succeed.
However, because you are an ectomorph, which is like the "skinny type", your workout exercises and routines will need to be different from the other types of body (which, by the way, are mesomorph and endomorph). Actually, skinny guys like us are usually better in cardio and endurance (jogging, cycling, etc.) but that also means you won't be able to gain muscles as fast as mesomorph or endomorph people. Unfortunately, you can't change your body type, it is in your genes.
What Kind Of Exercises Should You Do?
Ectomorphic people wanting to gain muscles are usually recommended to do workout such as squats, dead-lifts, pull-ups, bent-over rows, chest presses (same thing as push-ups but with dumbbells) and military presses. Theses are more "intensive" exercises which will help compensate your high cardio/low muscles. Always try to do them more intensively with less reps (versus doing them less intensively with more reps) because otherwise you will only be doing endurance and no muscle building!
Why Working Out Is Important
Right now maybe some of you are wondering "Why the heck would I waste so much time doing workouts?" Well believe me, I learned from experience that not only it is GREAT for your health, it also helps you shape a good upper body which you will be able to show off to your friends and to some girls too ;) But one of the most important things it does is that it actually makes you feel great inside that body. I mean, come on. Do you like your body right now? Are you ashamed when you need to take off your shirt? Or when people treat you as an little weak kid?
Me, personally, I was just completely ashamed of that. I'm 5'11" so people used to call me the "spaghetti boy". One day I just decided that it was enough and that I needed to get ripped whatever it took. And now that's how I am. :)
Why You Don't Need To Go To The Gym Now
When you're just starting out, you don't actually have to go to the gym. Most of the basic exercises can be done at home: push-ups, squats, etc. I also recommend you to buy some 10-20lbs dumbbells if you don't already have ones and practice your arms. After that, when you'll feel that it's just building up your endurance but no mass, then you can go to the gym, because otherwise you could just be wasting money.
How Often Should You Workout?
For an ectomorph, usually 3-4 times a week is enough, but once you'll get motivation and determination, you will probably do it everyday! Just don't forget this: NEVER loose your momentum. Don't stop your workouts for more than 5 days or you might never do them again.
In summary, if you're an ectomorph and you're looking for ectomorph workouts, then you should start with the exercises mentioned below, at home and around 3-4 times each week. Don't worry if you can't go to the gym and do some of these workouts for ectomorphs - just skip them. Heck, I started working out in my bedroom with one set of 10lbs dumbbells!
