The Effects Of Alcohol on Muscle Gain

So, what are the effects of alcohol on muscle gain?

The answer depends on a few factors. For example, how long has it been since your last workout? If you drink directly after a heavy workout, the alchohol in your system will bring your protein absorbtion to a hault. This means that your body will be completely unable to build any muscle!

But what about muscle you already have? Will you start to lose your gains?

Short answer: yes

Long answer: Alcohol not only buts your body into a catabolic(muscle eating) state; it raises your estrogen levels. This will lead to you putting on fat and losing muscle. You might even grow some breast tissue while you are at it! I have seen them too, the beer jugs.

I think that if you can show some self control, it is perfectly fine to have a beer now and then. What never should be mixed is serious training and binge drinking. If you want to do that, you might as well skip the training; it will not be of any benefit to you.

A major disadvantage to drinking is that it will often cause you to become dehydrated. This can upset a lot of body processes including ones vital to keeping your hormones stable and metabolism high. Becoming dehydrated this way over and over again will lead to your digestive tract becoming very inefficient at digesting food along with mood disorders and hormone imbalances.

One thing the two have in common is that they are both hard on the liver. The liver has to work hard to process protein and fat and even harder to clean alcohol out of your system. Naturally, doing the two at the same time will cause your liver to be stressed to the point where it could lose function or even lead to some more serious problems. The same could all be said about the kidneys.

If you really do desire perfection in your results, I would suggest giving up alcohol. You really are not missing much; the most enjoyed benefit from alcohol is being more relaxed in social situations anyways. Why not spend time working on your self worth and building up your body into something impressive? That way, you will not need any liquid courage to interact with people on the level that you really desire too. Confidence comes easily to someone who works hard and achieves. Alcohol is just a break from the cold reality; escapism.
