The Importance Of Weight Loss Goals

Recently I was helping one of my clients set up a program so that they could get in shape in time for the summer weather. At first they were a little confused when I asked them what their goals were. "It's to lose weight" they told me, to which I responded "Yes, but what specifically do you want to lose?" This may seem like nitpicking, but it is important. If we don't know where we are going, how are we supposed to get there? Setting goals is a great way to keep you motivated, and ensure the success that you desire.

1. Set Realistic Goals:

Don't try to lose 20 pounds in one week, and if you work 60 hours a week, you probably shouldn't plan to workout twice a day. Instead, scale things back, what kind of body do you want? Do you want a lean one? If you do you should probably plan to lose about a pound or two a week, trust me this adds up fast, and it will ensure you get that lean body you desire.

2. Set Specific Goals:

Saying "I want to lose weight" is great and all, but how much do you want to lose? Do you just want to lose weight, or do you want to lose fat and maintain muscle? How soon do you want to lose weight? What is your end goal? These are all things that you should consider, once you start getting into specifics it will become easy to create a plan, and easy to get excited about your future results.

3. Write Down Your Goal:

Write down your goal in a place where you can see it. Write out a contract and sign it, this will hold you to it, I know it sounds cheesy but it really can help you. Make sure that you tell other people about your goals to, stay away from people who discourage you in reaching your goal, most of them are just jealous. Once you have your goal written down make sure you read it every day, stay motivated, you will reach it!

4. Use Small Goals

Use small goals to reach your big goals. Every week I sit down and write out goals for the week that will bring me closer to my end goal. Have you ever heard that phrase how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time, it's the same way with your goals, one step at a time.

5. Reward yourself

This is a big one of course, you should reward yourself when you stick to you goals. Go out and get a massage, buy tickets to something cool you have been wanting to see, whatever keeps you motivated. Don't reward yourself with cruddy food, this of course goes against your goals, instead use these rewards as good ways to keep you motivated and make you feel good. For instance I used to do Crossfit and in order to reward myself I would get some crossfit protein to help me feel better.

Conclusion

Losing weight isn't tough conceptually, the tough part is just having the motivation to go through with it. If you set goals for yourself and do your best to follow them you will see results, and you will end up with that body you've always desired. You don't need anything more than proper nutrition however if you're looking for any good supplements I would recommend a good brand such as Progenex.
