What is it Like to Undergo Liposuction And Body Contouring?

Liposuction body contouring procedures can change a person’s life. Liposuction is a procedure that is used to contour and sculpt a person’s body. By suctioning excess fat out of targeted areas of the patients body, a plastic surgeon can create an aesthetically pleasing physique. Body contouring, in contrast, usually addresses problems like excess skin and small amounts of excess fat as well. There are a variety of different body contouring procedures available to patients today. These procedures are appropriately used to treat patients who have undergone profound weight loss. They are designed to help patients achieve a final, satisfactory outcome after shedding a lot of extra pounds.

Bariatric surgery is no walk in the park. Patients who have endured the rigors of bariatric procedures for weight loss may be hesitant about getting involved in other, new surgical procedures no matter what they promise to do for them. But liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that involves only very tiny incisions. The procedure can really even out the final results of a patient’s weight loss endeavors. Patients often recover from the procedure in one to two weeks and are able to return to work in a few days.

Body contouring surgeries, in contrast, may be a bit more intense than liposuction. A tummy tuck is a popular body contouring procedure in the United States today. The procedure is used to remove extra skin from the abdomen and provide additional support underneath the skin. Plastic surgeons may tighten up the abdominal muscles, for example, to give the abdomen and more toned and “fit” appearance. Sometimes liposuction and body contouring procedures are performed together to produce an even more pronounced effect on the body. Though patients who have had large sections of skin removed, abdominal muscles tightened, and excess fat suctioned out of the body may be very sore for a period of time after the procedure, recovering from a liposuction body contouring procedure is much easier than losing a lot of weight in the first place.

One of the first things a doctor will do in a liposuction or body contouring surgery is mark the patient’s body with a surgical marker to show where to make incisions, etc. After the surgical plan is in place, the patient is locally anesthetized for liposuction. The plastic surgeon may recommend general anesthesia for a patient who is undergoing a tummy tuck or a liposuction and body contouring procedure to be performed at the same time. After the procedure is complete, patients are moved into a recovery area. If the patient was only given local anesthesia, he or she will be allowed to go home shortly after it is complete. However, patients who have been given general anesthesia are monitored more closely for a longer period of time before being allowed to return home. Recovery from a tummy tuck could take up to a month and patients should prepare in advance for the recovery period. In contrast, recovery from liposuction takes only about a week to ten days before patients can get back to their normal daily routine.
