Workout With Swiss Balls

Abdominal training can be difficult to perform on a floor or flat surface, mostly because the human body is not flat. Swiss balls (also known as exercise balls) offer an innovative solution to this difficulty. These balls come in all sizes and color, a sure way to brighten up normally drab exercise equipment. Introduced by Swiss medical therapist, they offer a unique type of support to the body while working out.

Abdominal muscles are not the only beneficiaries of a Swiss Ball workout, basically in a full workout, all major muscle groups will be strengthened and toned. Working out with heavy weights, using dumbbells for toning up muscles and for support while performing a variety of Yoga positions can all benefit from the soft but firm support the ball offers.

Durability and maintenance of shape under force are a couple of the main advantages of these exercise balls. While the load handling abilities of each type of ball will vary by ball size and style, typically the max load figure will be included in the instructions. The workout advantage with the balls is that unlike the floor, walls or a bench, these sturdy but pliable workout buddies will provide soft yet firm support.

Depending on the ball size and style, there are different textures and colors available. If desired a ball matching the rest of the workout room could be found. Easily stored, they can also be used as chairs for a subtle workout of the lower back and abs while typing or surfing the internet. They can also be multitasked as kids play toys. Because of the softness, but ability to bounce, children absolutely love these balls.

These balls were developed to support the body during physical therapy and were introduced to primarily to physical therapist. Depending on the exercise, these balls often require maintaining balance which recruits additional small muscles. These small muscles generally are the ones are joints and this strengthening in effect helps to stabilize these joints.

Many muscle toning exercises and Yoga poses often require supportive aides for their often challenging body positioning. A Swiss ball can be quite effective as the support for these poses. The element of stability offered by the balls are much more effective than the support offer by a floor, wall or chair.Sitting on a ball will cause the body to automatically adjust in order to maintain balance. This causes even muscles not actively engaged in the exercise to be recruited and strengthened.

Physiotherapy treatments also regularly use exercises using Swiss balls. These balls can help alleviate spinal disorders and backaches. By introducing balance exercises with an exercise ball, the body is required to make small adjustments through a limited range of movement and this helps to minimize lower back pain.

There are exercises using Swiss balls created specifically for those who have had severe to moderate back pain which will allow them to recover the ability to move relatively pain free. Exercise balls also help develop a wider range of motion, improved muscle strength and greater flexibility while undergoing spine treatments.

While the Swiss ball is technically and most commonly used as a physical therapy or physiotherapy aide, there are numerous benefits to using them on a daily basis for normal workouts as well.
