I guess we should begin by defining what insulated concrete forms are. ICFs look a lot like hollow blocks and are stacked almost the same way as LEGO blocks. The two foam insulations—mostly made from polystyrene—are reinforced by concrete in between and are joined together by steel ties.
So why choose ICFs over other building systems? I’m glad you ask because that’s exactly what the succeeding paragraphs will try to answer.
Here Are Four Advantages of ICFs
Sturdy – This is one of the major benefits of an insulated concrete form. The concrete poured in the molds and the excellent wall reinforcements make the whole structure ideal for locations that are frequently visited by natural calamities, like hurricanes and earthquake.
You also don’t have to worry about termite or other pest problems because high grade ICFs are void of their food source. Plus, ICF houses are relatively more resistant to fire compared to wooden houses.
Energy Efficient – One of the main features that any homeowner wants for their home is energy efficiency. Fortunately, these systems can provide such benefit. Concrete walls serve as a barrier against cold spots or drafts. Concrete is also known to have high thermal mass—meaning, temperature peaks are leveled.
A study by Portland Cement Association showed that ICFs can provide roughly 30%-50% of energy discounts. So, if you have a 2,000 square feet house that’s built in a moderate environment, you can expect around $200 of yearly savings from heating.
Faster Construction Time – This is one reason why contractors and home builders like ICFs. Unlike other construction methods, ICF molds are easily stacked using the interlocking teeth or tongue and groove configuration. Some manufacturers even make reversible ICFs, which can be stacked and joined regardless of what part of the molds—top or bottom—are used.
Water lines and electrical wiring are easily inserted into the structure by just simply incising the foam insulations.
Safe for Humans and Nature – This is perfect for homeowners who are looking for “green” construction systems. Saving 8 to 9 trees, lower carbon emissions and toxic-free materials—sounds good? Although some units use adhesives, most products manufactured today don’t need these during construction. Some products are also made from reused wood or foam fiber materials.
Honestly, there’s no construction method today that’s free from any disadvantages. It’s the same story with ICF homes. Some disadvantages you could possibly face are high upfront cost, humidity and structural modification problems. Before deciding, make sure to sit with your contractor to discuss if insulated concrete forms will work for your needs.
